IIRC from when I had an 81/110 as a daily driver, the SCSI busses on the 81/110 are the same as on the 8100; twin normal 5MB/s SCSI busses. I had a pair of drives striped across the busses to get almost 10MB/s while it was running Linux as a web server.
The "System 100" was an 81/110 bundled...
Good network file sharing performance on an SE/30? Certainly not.
The question is about good network performance on something fast like a IIfx or Quadra (or even a PowerMac). We already know we can push about 12MB/s through a JackHammer or SiliconExpress IV... if we could get similar...
Has anybody ever even used one of the AsanteFast 10/100 NuBus cards? They were a pretty late arrival on the market, and IIRC they used a cheap chipset. A few years ago Trag had a bunch of them, I dunno if that's still the case.
Can you push anything like line speed through them, even on a NuBus...
I have found that carefully-chosen 10k and 15k SCSI drives are actually quite quiet and cool-running. I've had especially good luck with the Cheetah drives with fluid-dynamic bearings, and some of the later Hitachi UltraStar drives. I had two 72GB UltraStar 10K300 drives in RAID 1 in a quiet...
I keep waffling back and forth about whether to put my AudioMedia II NuBus board to use in my hifi system, for digitizing high-quality audio.
A big drawback is that a well-performing 68k Mac is going to need several NuBus cards -- the AMII, SCSI (JackHammer or SE-IV), and 10/100 Ethernet (if...
I have two ideas, neither of which may be the right ones.
Did you switch to HD SC Setup (as you linked) or Drive Setup?
Drive Setup is the newer of the two, and is the driver that improved the disk access speed in my SE/30 with a 7200RPM SCSI drive.
If you tried with HD SC Setup, I'd try...
When I was working a lot on my SE/30 with a 7200RPM SCSI drive in it, I noticed a *large* gain in sequential transfer speed by upgrading to the 7.5.5 Drive Setup drivers instead of HD SC Setup. There might be some notes about that on my website, I'm not sure.
If you're running 7.5.5 on that...
I wrote a couple articles about this question on Low End Mac a few years back. They're still useful, methinks.

I've gotta say congrats, JDW. That's a delightful config you've finally managed to put together. The chase can go on for years, but it's great fun when (if) you finally succeed!
Nicely done!
Also, this doesn't appear to be well-known, but you can do TCP/IP filesharing on old macs like the SE/30 by copying the "ShareWay IP Personal Bkgnd" application from a MacOS 9 install. You need to launch it manually, but sticking an alias into the Startup Items folder is...
I seem to recall that archive.org had a working mirror complete with the drivers, but it was a couple years ago and my memory is hazy. Have you tried that?
Also, grats on the score. I'd love to have one like that -- I'm a sucker for strange CPU upgrades.
I take it you mean the MacCon si for the SE/30 / IIsi PDS?
From their size I would intuit that they're probably the same spec as the caps used for recapping the SE/30 mobo... the values of which I've forgotten.
If this *is* the card you're talking about, I'll dig mine out of the basement and...
I seem to recall that the two soldered-on PRAM batteries on the 6-slot II-series Macs will cause this behavior when they're flat.
Am I right that they are what you replaced patatas?
There may be some light at the end of this tunnel yet! There may be a IIfx ROM SIMM incompatibility.
I played around with my IIci and the Turbo601 a little bit this evening. Like most IIcis, it's got a ROM SIMM socket, a soldered ROM, and a jumper to select which ROM to use. Here were some...
Not in retirement from Compacts so much as being totally out of 68k for a few years. Starting to get a little more free time and evaluate how deep I want to go.
Sorry I missed your report on this config! The only one I'd seen was from an old AF post whose author said the T601 did nothing in the...
Here it is, after years of waiting!
The DayStar Turbo601 does *not* work in the SE/30, and I'm pretty sure we won't ever convince it to. :(
The good news:
-With the Turbo601 installed, the SE/30 produces the "PowerMac" startup chime. This indicates it's working to at least a limited extent...
