What to do when your Power Mac boots to a “forbidden” symbol

That's good! I wonder if you have a flashed PC video card of some description in there? Some of those don't work properly in framebuffer mode during boot...

What to do when your Power Mac boots to a “forbidden” symbol

It's certainly possible, but I don't think I would jump to that conclusion if the early boot is failing... If the video error is present on the OF prompt or the startup manager screen then it would certainly indicate a gpu fault... Idk if verbose or single user would work, I think this screen...

What to do when your Power Mac boots to a “forbidden” symbol

That error simply means that the system software is not bootable, generally because the installed system is for different hardware. Nothing to do with the graphics card.

Fixing a Tired Eject Motor for a Vintage Mac Floppy Drive

What happens is that any deviation from perfect roundess of the commutator causes the brushes to bounce, which in turn causes them to arc. That's why this job is typically done on a lathe.

Fixing a Tired Eject Motor for a Vintage Mac Floppy Drive

As someone who has worked quite a lot with industrial brushed motors, I feel obliged to say that this method of cleaning the commutator is likely to dramatically shorten the life of the brushes, and is liable to be quite a short-lived repair of the commutator itself. I don't mean to rain on...

    Salvation Archive

I re-read the op three times and still don't understand what op is trying to acheive. However, it reminded me of, and prompted be to go looking for a previous thread created by op - https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/recent-excavations.50518/ It appears that op's mentions to defor are in...

    Last battery

The first computer I ever bought with my own money was an SE, bought second hand on a very tight budget some time around 1992. My mum used it to write letters after I upgraded, and my younger sister used it for school work after I left home in 1997. I guess it was finally retired some time...

Artetech Intermedia Disk Controller - what's that?

Yep it seems I arsed that up a bit! Hopefully I can find that page again... Here it is: https://www.cnwrecovery.co.uk/intermedia/intermedia_technical_development.html

Artetech Intermedia Disk Controller - what's that?

I've never heard of it, but this is somehow related. The card in the picture also has ARTETCH-2 on the silkscreen and the eeprom stickers are the same style. The author seems to like sharing information and there is an email address on the home page... Edit: This seems to be the same guy, in...

Does this look like a dead 601?

Yes to all the above, I guess I'll just bite the bullet and get to work on it!

Does this look like a dead 601?

I normally would of course, just that there's nearly 30 caps on this board!

Does this look like a dead 601?

That would make sense! If the consensus is that the cpu doesn't look obviously borked, then I'll remove all the old caps and give it another clean and see if it at least doesn't trip the PSU at that point.

Does this look like a dead 601?

I don't see any touching legs, but there are potentially many faults with this logic board, there were clearly mice in there but after I washed it it looked salvagable. I have two boards like I said, this one is actually the cleanest, the other one has a lot of corrosion especially in the simm...

Does this look like a dead 601?

One of two 7100s I just acquired, both in bad shape, one 66Mhz, one 80. I haven't recapped either of them yet, trying to decide which, if either of them, to start with. Behaviour with this one (80MHz board): Plug in power Turns on by itself, PSU fan starts, power led is lit, no chime or...

How to build for 040 FPU with Codewarrior Pro 4

Thanks for the reply! My test project is a SIOUX project with a couple of basic trig functions using cout to display the results. No to gestalt, just assumed as it's running on a full 040 and the CW documentation said that it should... Yes to the _F_ variants, not when I first posted, but I...

How to build for 040 FPU with Codewarrior Pro 4

Figured it out, kind of. At least I got a test project to build... First, you have to replace MathLib68K in your project with one built with 68881 enabled, but there is no build target for that so you have to make one first. Then, if using SIUOX console, you also have to replace the MSL C and...

How to build for 040 FPU with Codewarrior Pro 4

According to the CW documentation, selecting 68881 for floating point should generate fpu instructions on a 68040. There are two codepaths you can follow to compile for fpu, either by using Metrowerks' math.h or by using Apple's fp.h (a comment in math.h says that using fp.h is not recommended...

Mac G4 Cube graphic card options

The graphics card in a cube is in a really confined space and does not get good air flow so it gets real toasty, you need to keep that in mind. My cube has a 1.2GHz Encore which actually runs quite cool and quiet with it's little 80mm fan, and I settled on a Radeon 7000 for the graphics card...
