I think Fizzbinn is onto something here. Looking at the 3400 and G3 developer notes, there’s a memory controller difference for 128 MB cards (64 bits wide, 4x 4M x 16 Bit DRAMs per Bank, 4 banks):
The 3400 version of that configuration needs address bits 9 and 10 swapped on the memory card...
I use a Microsoft Sculpt ergonomic keyboard at home and at work, so I’d actually love to have one of these for my Mac collection (assuming the keys aren’t terrible to type on, even if they aren’t as glorious as the AEK/AEK-II!)
The other thing to watch out for is that different cells have different discharge rates - even if the physically smaller cells had the same nominal voltage and capacity, they might have a lower discharge rate and so the voltage might drop under load.
I have not. I got as far as getting them onto an OS 9 machine and opening them in Word, but the formatting in a bunch of figures like the block diagrams was wrong. I’m wondering if the originals had figures which were produced differently for the hard copy, and then (poorly) converted to Word...
Super cool to have that history with that machine! What were the SE/30 and NeXT machine serving when you had them running on the Apple LAN back in the day?
My recollection is that modems and things that follow the DCE/DTE relationship use straight-through cables, while printers and point-to-point LocalTalk use the crossover.
@jcs developed and released “Amend”, a small version control system for Classic Macs. More details are here:
https://jcs.org/amend
I haven’t used it, but I’m planning to check it out if I ever get around to learning Classic Mac development.
I’d ping @Amiga of Rochester (https://amigaofrochester.com/) to see if they’d be able/willing to do it. I’ve not used their services, but others here have recommended them.
Does anyone know what font Apple typeset the developer notes in? I’m pretty sure I don’t have it installed, as the figures all look a little off on my stock OS 9 machine with Word 5.1.
I’d like to get the right fonts installed so I can convert it to PDF with everything looking correct.
Happy to help 😀
All of those resistance measurements look pretty good - nothing obviously wrong at least.
Can you take a resistance measurement between pin 71 on the ASIC and pin 27 on the SRAM? You mentioned that you checked the /WE trace before, but it’s worth checking again.
Also, with the...
Hmm… resistance measurements don’t look too bad. I’m not sure what normal would be, but for a partial short I’d expect something < 100 Ohms. For comparison, can you measure the resistance between /OE (pin 22) and 5V and between /OE and GND?
Lifting pin 71 on the ASIC to isolate might be a good...
While I agree that the thermal paste is certainly shot by now, be aware that the 601 CPU is exceedingly fragile, and that tremendous care must be taken if you attempt it. See the thread here:

What is it that doesn’t look right or isn’t working?
From the images it looks like the driver is loading, the card is detected, TCP/IP is set to Ethernet, and you’re getting DHCP settings from your router (obviously I have no way of knowing if they are the correct settings or not). It seems...
