Is your 512 MB a PC100 or a PC133? OWC only lists the PC100 as compatible with the clamshell, which I think is wrong. But if it's a PC133, maybe that's the issue. I have a 256 MB that works in my tangerine clamshell, if I decide to upgrade I suppose I could send it to you.
My Performa 640 DOS Compatible makes this sound very infrequently, even after being recapped. I’d love to understand why. I like the suggestion of removing the sound card on the DOS card. I could do if for mine, but it would be difficult to tell if it made a difference.
I had one in worse shape than that, recapped it. It would only power on if I flipped the power four or five times.
Washed the board, dried it, put it back in. Powers on every time now.
Mine has a slightly different layout but the same chips. Works fine in a B&W G3 in Mac OS 9.1 with the #1 driver link here: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/realtek-ethernet-pci-card-drivers-rtl8100blrtl8100clrtl8101lrtl8139cl-rtl8139clrtl8139dlrtl8100
There are even instructions there for...
I have a couple just like that. Likely because they worked in macs? But it's been so long, I don't remember. I can throw one in a Mac and see if it shows up.
The only option left for ethernet is a CS II ethernet card. If you have other macs, you can set up a LocalTalk network, but it’s slow and difficult to configure if you want to browse the web. For copying files it just works though.
You have a PCI slot open? rtl8139 ethernet card: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/realtek-ethernet-pci-card-drivers-rtl8100blrtl8100clrtl8101lrtl8139cl-rtl8139clrtl8139dlrtl8100
I've never used any with mine, they don't get very hot and the metal to metal contact is pretty good. But, officially, you should probably use some paste or a thermal pad :)
I was a cluster consultant in a room full of 6100s and music students would power the machines off, losing their work, all the time trying to eject floppies.
Yes, to my surprise my clamshell boots Mac OS 9 from a USB drive. I formatted it as HFS+ on another Mac, and either copied the system folder to it or installed Mac OS 9 from an installer. Don’t remember which.
