    TashRouter: An AppleTalk Router

I now have tashrouter working as well. The writeup by @finkmac was helpful. In my case, netatalk is running in a VM. I was able to run tashrouter in a separate VM, but with libvirt getting one to start up before the other was tricky. So I ended up using the tap / bridge setup above directly on...

Boot Pre-Firewire iMac G3 from USB Challenge.

My pre-FW Clamshell (to my surprise, at the time) boots from a USB stick with 9.x on it. This is a relief as the CD-ROM barely functions so I have no other way to boot it without setting up a net boot server. I have not been able to get it to boot Mac OS X from USB however.

My AGP G4/400, one of the earliest ones, shipped with 9.0.4. You must have had to order the day they were announced to get 8.6!

    PM G4 motherboards

For a long time I thought I had a bad QS, because I would test it without all four (not three) CPU module screws... It is certainly unusual.

    Online Vintage Gaming?

There are, but even just two player games over ARA were very laggy. Classic Marathon uses a ring topology, so every packet has to get sent from player to player. The latency is the sum of the point to point latency from each player to player--it would quickly become unplayable over the internet...

    Online Vintage Gaming?

Sadly, Marathon can only be played online on modern computers. It just missed the beginning of online play in 90s shooters.

    PM G4 motherboards

Here's the mod to get the QS CPUs to work in older models, from the archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20071211003550/http://homepage.mac.com/josephk/G4_mod.html Look for the 12V connector section

    PM G4 motherboards

QS provides 12V to one of the three screws(!) on the processor card. So you would need to supply that for it to work in a DA.

How to Play Marathon over a LAN on Classic Macs

Thanks for the mention of Aleph One on your site. Just a note: bungie.org is not run by Bungie! They're fine with the serial number being posted, as they have released all of the trilogy to play gratis, but they did not post it. Bungie's site is bungie.net

    Repairs, on-board RAM and 475 / 575 boards

I re-capped a 475 and it required a patch to one of the SCSI data lines to get the internal 50 pin SCSI working. The whole back side of the board has this weird white particulate sediment or like stress pattern from flexing, I can't tell what it is. Hard to know what happened to the thing. It's...

    Performa 475 and BlueSCSI

Do other SCSI devices work internally? I also had to repair one of the data lines to get my internal 50-pin working on the 475.

Just press command Q when it gets there. It’ll complain and offer to skip registration so you can finish setting up an account.

    Performa 475 and BlueSCSI

I had a little trouble this week with a ZuluSCSI and a 475. The TERM dip switch was set, but the log showed it wasn’t activated. Toggling it off / back on activated termination and the 475 was able to recognize it.
