    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Here's a question for you MPW experts: did someone ever implement tab completion for MPW? That was something that was always a pain point for me once I started doing dev work on VAX, IRIX and other unixes in the 90s -- csh had nice tab completion, and every time I went back to MPW, I'd try to...

Unable to upgrade Blue & White G3 to 10.4.11 - help?

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g3/specs/powermac_g3_300_bl.html -- all B&W G3s should support 10.4.11; that's the last OS they support. However, doesn't the combo update require 10.4.8? I've got an all-in-one updater that's 907.3MB (will update any version of 10.4) and a combo...

PowerMac G4 Cube powered over USB-C!

USB-PD 3.1 supports up to 240W, so from a wattage perspective, you're fine. You'd probably want to ensure there's some sort of handshake/regulation to ensure it's not drawing more than 210W though. And it'd need to be USB-PD 3.1 or later to go that high.

    Gray NDRV solution!

Oops. I thought I'd fixed that. I'll have to go back and find / re-assemble everything, as binhex or macbinary at some point. I know I've still got the resource forks for at least some of the dumps.

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Talking about the different boot architectures... not sure we can really separate the Toolbox/System/Patches that cleanly? After all, the Mac OS ROM file on disk contains the entirety of the 680x0 Toolbox + patches in low memory doesn't it? The early 6800 stuck most of the system in ROM...

    XGecu T48 Replacement ZIF socket

I haven't found one; I pulled a similar stunt around 6 years ago, and wasn't able to find the square pin style anywhere at the time. Ended up stealing a socket off another board that was damaged in non-ZIF ways. Luckily I had such a board handy. I don't have the device anymore though, so I...

    Goodwill find: Mac SE

According to my writeup on the Fandom page: I can't recall where I got my copy of 6.0.1; it wasn't that MG one, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't off my own floppies. Checking my ADC archive, it doesn't appear to be from there either. I'd love to see a properly imaged set of 6.0.1 floppies, even...

PBG3 Wallstreet - How stiff is too stiff for the hinges?

I've gone through a few 2008 MBPs with this hinge issue; I ended up breaking all sorts of things on one when it finally seized up all the way and I tried to force it anyway. On those hinge mechanisms, figuring out what to lubricate isn't all that obvious; best thing I've found is to be gentle...

RealBasic - Opening the Resource Fork as a Binary Stream

Wow... that brings back memories! I remember using RB to create a Hotline client back in the 90s when Hinks sold out to the Canadians and the monstrosity that was 1.5 was released :) As a Hotwire beta tester, I was already familiar with the protocol. I don't think the ResourceStream plugin...

How does the L2 cache work on NuBus (PowerPC)

That's awesome; I need to find the time to roll all this into MacROMan, so people can look up ROM details and not just identify which is which.

    LCWeb, a 68k web server

There's a number of different web proxy solutions available now, an XMPP client or two (which can do IM if you have a modern XMPP proxy), modern AIM and ICQ servers, and I seem to recall someone recently ported a TLS library to 68000 code for use in System 6 and later. As such, there's already...

    Making an apple iii replica

You could look at the code in MAME -- we know that's functional, and it's documented. It should at least tell you how all the components in your schematic are supposed to behave.

NanoMac, a candy bar sized FPGA Mac Plus / PlusToo

Here's some other versions, if someone's got the time to grab them from the archive: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.cerlsoundgroup.org/* (use the filter hqx to see the Mac files). Looks like it has versions 6.0.0, 7.0.3, 7.2.7, 7.4.2, 8.0.0, 8.4.1 beta, and 9.0.0. 8.x and later appear...

NanoMac, a candy bar sized FPGA Mac Plus / PlusToo

Please do! At the time, I was only using DMCS and when it came along, Finale (which I despised from the start). I'd be very interested to see someone else's idea of what notation software could look like. https://www.cerlsoundgroup.org/cgi-bin/Lime/Larchive.html has 7.42, but I'm pretty sure...

Scans of Macintosh 128k, 512k, 512ke and Plus manuals

Thanks! And thanks for going for excessively high quality. You can always downsample, but up-sampling is all guesswork, even with today's models. I eventually stopped asking other people to scan things for me because I invariably got them at 70 or 90 dpi (or less) from which it was pretty...

    PM6500 and Upgrading to 9.2.2

I'm curious what you mean by this. Do you mean running 9.2.2 in SheepShaver on the G5, the Classic environment, or something else? It's too bad we're unlikely to get native 9.x support for the G5, as that would be a truly awesome environment!

    StyleWriterII Paper Feed Fix

My second printer was a StyleWriter II (my first being an ImageWriter II). I remember getting frustrated with the rollers; they wore down and lost their grip in an annoyingly short amount of time. I seem to recall replacing them with some hand-carved rubber at one point. But other than that...

Chop Orinoco Silver PCMCIA card into Airport slot

Time for me to be That Guy. I often work from home. My home network has to be at least as secure as anything I do at work. And threat actors out there today are intentionally targeting high value targets at home, hoping that they can use cross-pollination to gain access to work environments...

    Self-Contained POTS System?

Also worth noting that you can combine this type of setup with http://www.raspbx.org/ to create a home PBX that can actually connect over the Internet to the real system via VoIP. This essentially means that you become your own hyper-local landline provider, so not only can you dial up to the...

400k Drive Repair Guide - A Call to Arms!!!!!!

Are those resistors down-line from the hall effect sensors all fine? It sounds to me like the signals are running hot; it could be the only problem here is too much / not enough resistance? I'd trace back from the sensors and verify that you're getting correct resistance across the traces back...
