    Skipping the Startup Memory Test

Thanks for sharing this! I know I've come across that issue in the past and got really frustrated that cmd-opt didn't work. Now I know why!

    Mathey MSATA-02MAC SATA Card

Interesting; the pic on the box matches your board; the board in the picture does not. Guess they were into continual improvement :)

The Complete Book of Macintosh Assembly language Programming Vol I

https://books.google.ca/books/about/The_complete_book_of_Macintosh_assembly.html?id=UNcmAAAAMAAJ&redir_esc=y Nice find! This is a book I was trying to get my hands on way back in 1989, and it wasn't available in my area.

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

Solaris and Irix had different strengths; Alphas running VMS were really a completely different beast, and the system was never really finished when DEC ran into problems. I like to think that the Alpha platform would have been the start of something awesome (kind of like Taligent would have...

Restoring a Classic II: The Day My Ultrasonic Cleaner Met Its Match

My thought process exactly. Interesting that the AI obscured the trademarked logo, but otherwise came through on the directive! It even almost got the number of fingers correct.

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

Hah; my university was in the same boat; we also migrated from SVR4 to Irix and had NextStations -- but I didn't get to play around with Solaris until after I'd graduated. So most of my educational work was done on SVR4 and Irix, with a bit done on DEC's Ultrix, or later OpenVMS. I had an...

Restoring a Classic II: The Day My Ultrasonic Cleaner Met Its Match

That first paragraph... you should get ChatGPT to generate you an image for it.

    Gray NDRV solution!

Should your worksheet include a check for a resource fork? There's a few files you converted to MacBinary that didn't have their resource fork anymore (the ones I hadn't updated).

    Living the dreamm~ PowerMac G5

I'm also no expert, but that's my understanding too; G4 adds AltiVec, a proper SMP implementation and a few related instruction extensions, mostly to do with hardware acceleration pipelines. In other words, as far as the instruction set itself goes, AltiVec is the big thing; most of the other...

Anyone have a copy of "AppleTalk Phase 2 Protocol Specification" (C0144LL/A)?

Too bad a bunch of us bidding pennies for the document wouldn't have any effect! Getting these documents digitized secures a significant piece of usable history.

Backporting HFS+ to Mac OS 8.0 and earlier

Has anyone made a version of the System Enabler 356 yet that has the HFS+ patches AND the System 7 patches? Separately, has anyone tried making a universal System Enabler for legacy 68k systems specifically to add these patches? It seems to me that now that we've got a better understanding of...

Mac IIci with a working Quantum HD

I love PowerTalk and the original Apple Keychain! I also have never actually used them for anything useful.

Apple Extended Keyboard II not working - All 3 LEDs on

You know, this is a good reminder about the other bit regarding caps that we don't normally discuss; they can get "dirty" and need a few good slow charge/discharge cycles before they return to expected tolerances, especially if they're heavily overspecced.

    Hermes BBS install

Used to run one a long LONG time ago, but my experience is more with BII/SS server configuration :) MarisaG's got lots of other services up and running on the same config though; Hotline hasn't been an issue, for example, and neither has FirstClass Server.

    Gray NDRV solution!

I think I'm just going to drop-replace my archive with yours and then script up a little thing to validate the version numbers; as you pointed out, 8.9.1 and 9.0.1 have the same data fork MD5, as do 7.8.1 and 7.9.1. I'll pull the right version numbers out and get all that sorted.

    90s Auto Repair Management

Hah... I recall SCADA systems in 2015 that were still running DOS. And the worst part was, a lot of the sensors were using old specs such that they'd respond to any signal on the line with no verification or encryption, and the system just had to deal with that, as nobody was going to update...

What host are you running it on? You'll want to check for open listening ports bound to the SheepShaver process.

    Gray NDRV solution!

Is IOGraphicsFamily the only place that loads PEFs via ndrv in OS X? The location seems a bit... specific. After all, the one place we're going to see PEFs needing to be parsed is via the EFI spec (or WINE, but that's not Apple), which explains the ndrv approach, but there's more that needs to...
