Building an internal grayscale card for the SE/30

Now, I’ve never programmed a rom or boot routine or whatever sorcery would be needed haha. But in my uninformed mind a simple timer loop switching images every X milliseconds should do the trick haha. If there’s space enough for x amount of images in the rom of course.

Building an internal grayscale card for the SE/30

Now if you feel like complicating it further, how about a animated boot splash? If it all possible to let’s say display 5-20 different boot screens in quick succession, that could be really cool! Let me know if you want any design/animation help. I’m a (was) a graphic designer by trade.

    Nice score!

Building an internal grayscale card for the SE/30

(OK here I REALLY don’t know what I’m talking about) But I wonder if it’s at all possible to declare a 1-bit mode that is kind of “simulated”. Ie the card does not output a “true” 1-bit signal, but simply replaces the (internal?) CLUT with only 1-bit colors..

Building an internal grayscale card for the SE/30

I have no clue what I’m talking about here so sorry if this is obvious stuff, but could it be related to QD’s Gdevice record and device list? In combination with the Speedometer Benchmark calling a function to use the device suitable for a 1-bit depth? Ie as the current device does not support...

Building an internal grayscale card for the SE/30

This is beyond amazing! I’m wondering how one finds and sets the bit depth without picture, sounds… difficult 😅. How about a ”simple” extension that sets the bit depth, wouldn’t that provide somewhat of a stop-gap measure? Cannot wait (for hopefully being able) to buy one of these!

Thank you for confirming. Will get an order in!

I’m trying to track down replacement chips for the F253’s, but there are so many variants and they all look the same? Does anyone know which ones would be correct? I’ve found: SN74F253D SN74F253DR SN74F253DRG4 Thanks

Thank you so much! That REALLY speaks torwards UE8/UD8 which I suspect as these F253’s look poor. All F258’s visually at least looks 100%. I’ll have those swapped and will report back. Thanks again!

My SE/30 hates 16mb ram sticks

Ok, thanks. Behavior is works perfectly with all sim slots populated as long as the individual ram sims is less than 16mb. With 16mb sims it gives death chimes and jailbar pattern on boot, irregardless of being installed in bank A or B.

My SE/30 hates 16mb ram sticks

Based on the good looks of the area / chips (no battery leakage whatsoever), would you still consider it possible there could be a faulty chip there? Or would you recommend replacing UD8 / UE8 first and see (although I'm unsure those chips could cause that error to start with)?. Really...

My SE/30 hates 16mb ram sticks

Overall, that area really looks pristine, so I find it kind of hard to believe anything should be wrong there. UE8 / UD8 on the other hand..

My SE/30 hates 16mb ram sticks

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. I believe that is the line I’ve followed on the schematics as it ends on pin 24 on the simm slot. But to be honest, it’s kind of a labyrinth with that signal being muxed and passes through a multitude of chips haha. If you look on the schematics...

My SE/30 hates 16mb ram sticks

A proper cleaning didn’t do it. I suspect UE8 / UD8 as those are the only chips that look at all effected. If I’m not mistaken A12 passes through these (put as part of the video system?). Is there any chance these chips could be the problem, or should I continue to look elsewhere?

Aaaand: UK6 (+ UJ6) UB8 (+ UA8, UC8, UD8) UC6, UC7 UE8 and some others I missed as part of the video circuit. Gha basically the entire board haha. This area looks really poor from leaking caps, I guess I’ll have a good ol’ scrub of the entire board.

My SE/30 hates 16mb ram sticks

If I'm reading the schematics correctly (and haven't missed something), it seems the A12 line passes by the following chips on the way to the ram slots (other ram lines routes through the chips in parenthesis). UI5 UI3 (+ UJ3, UI2, UJ2, UI4,UJ4,) RP5 (+ RP4, RP6) UI8 VIA1 VIA2 I'll start with...

My SE/30 hates 16mb ram sticks

Here’s the two different sets I have, both with several confirmed successful uses in the SE/30, so don’t think anything would be wrong with these. I’ve also attached some pic’s of the MB. It’s been cleaned locally around the replaced caps. I guess it could use another thorough cleaning but I’ve...

My SE/30 hates 16mb ram sticks

Thanks. Visually all chips looks good. Currently trying to figure out the schematics and figuring out what goes where on the MB to check the A12 line. Not easy haha, especially due to the very limited time with two small kids at home. Can I use Bolle’s gerber files to more easily follow where...

Sadly no error codes, just horizontal lines and a chime of death. Will have to check the mb more closely. Both sets should be fine, or at least one as they’re both brand new.
