Out of curiosity, have you tried the 16/600 PS for "modern" printing? I've read it's possible if you set an IP address using the classic Mac utility... but I'm not sure if that's via lpd or...
I have a 512k, eMate, 660av and 8150 running on LocalTalk, plus a FastPath and TashTalk running on a Pi for Netatalk. Happy to give it a test if there’s one available!
Interestingly, early Farallon EtherWave AAUI adapters had a labeled SQE switch;
Later ones did not:
(I understand SQE was not the issue in your situation.)
Here’s a question for those familiar with the 8100/110 and similar: is there a safe way to remove the Peltier cooler without damage? Scribe65’s video mentions the Service Guide warns against it.
I’ve done a pretty good ultrasonic clean of my motherboard by putting it in edge-first on all four...
I acquired a LC I recently just for this purpose -- it's such an odd, compromised screen resolution, albeit one that looks physically fantastic with the original 12" monitor. LC I's are interesting due to their ability to run System 6, and present a 68020. This makes them a much smaller proxy...
I recently purchased a bulk lot of crushed ABS plastic:
and realized the seller had accidentally included a Workgroup Server 8150/110 ;)
In all seriousness, even knowing what I was in for, it's pretty impressive seeing what condition these are in nowadays. The SGI community has a...
Looks like that's the model I have as well:
For upgrading the boot PROM to 5.1.2, I guess I'd need a flasher with that socket type? Does anyone know what the name of it is?
I wonder what the DIP switches on the 10BaseT module configure. My module (a Rev A, like @JAG 's) also has all set to off... in fact there's a piece of formerly-sticky material on top to ensure they all stay that way:
The other thing that’s interesting is the notion of a “LocalTalk scanner.” I honestly can’t remember any of these existing, but it does make sense from a share-the-cost perspective. (We are well before the era of networked multifunction printers here.)
I’m 99% sure this is a software router between LocalTalk and Ethernet, but I’m interested in the software CDEV and the “Forward Transfer Algorithm” they mention.
Doesn’t seem to be preserved on Macintosh Garden…
Thanks @Mark Simonson! I came across an article written in November 1984 (published in the Spring 1985 BMUG Newsletter) by Fred Huxham, that delves into the same FontEdit tool. Attached here in case it is of interest...
Amazing to see one of these in the wild... first advertised in July 1984:
The date suggests this was definitely compatible with the 128k. However I shudder to think how MFS would deal with 10 megs of storage.
There's a great writeup on this drive here: Tecmar MacDrive: First Hard Drive...
Wow, you're right -- switching those two lines did the trick! Amazing to have a 660av, 512k, and Mini vMac all on the same network talking to the same netatalk server! Thanks to you and all the rest who have contributed to these efforts...
This was extraordinarily helpful, and has Netatalk successfully communicating with both Mini vMac and LocalTalk devices connected to a TashTalk hat.
The only thing I can't seem to get working is other classic Macs on the same Ethernet segment as the Raspberry Pi running Netatalk with the...
