Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Inspired by @cheesestraws 's improbable (but factual!) deep-dive into NeuNet, I wanted to ask for insights or experience with a much-discussed, and perhaps little-deployed, late 1980s AppleTalk physical network: Fiber Optics, from DuPont. I've chosen to call this "FiberTalk", on (slim) evidence...
Hi all, I understand that the MacEffects Thunder card is not guaranteed to work on the original LC. Was curious if folks had any experiences with this combo? In another thread, somebody mentioned an INIT that was written for the original card design (before MacEffects re-created it), which was...
Can I ask if the Lisa immediately powers on, without you pressing the button, when it's connected to AC power? Mine was doing this and it came down to a broken power switch (a Honeywell part you can still order) which was triggering the high-voltage improperly (and eventually leading to a "52...
Do you have it connected over ADB as well (if it contains such a connector)? I halfway remember needing to do that on these monitors (although you would think they would just use sense pins…)
Here's an oddball question: is there a way to run multiple DDP-based AppleShare servers on the physical interface? I think I understand how to do this on IP networks (what we used to call multihoming, nowadays done via this or simiar), but I'm not quite sure how to do so with AppleTalk.
(This...
I don’t, but I do think that the “floppy location” icons are part of the ROM on (all?) Old World systems. There’s a Finder hack to allow these pointing icons to show up instead of the generic floppy disk icons in System 6. (I‘ve done this on my dual-floppy LC).
It seems like this is showing...
Related… I remember a “for GeoPort” sticker when the QuickTake shipped, but with hindsight it seems to have been Apple using the terminology of their then-current serial ports. The QuickTake didn’t transfer any faster when connected to the GeoPort versus a regular 8-pin Mac serial ports.
That all sounds good! I could imagine some situations where there is an advantage to having a slug-like short label and a lengthier display name argument. (Not least in non-Englsih contexts.)
I wonder if the new name argument could be optional, to stop existing 4.x configs from breaking?
Here's a quick question: is case respected in afp.conf for volume names? Say I have this volume:
[Applications]
path = /home/pi/Applications
legacy volume size = yes
In Netatalk 4.20dev, it shows in the both the classic Chooser and modern MacOS as applications, not Applications. Noticed this...
Looking at the image on that Polish blog, I suspect it's a scan from MacUser or Macworld, either of which might have had access to prototype machines to prepare articles given print's long lead times. You could verify this by checking the issues -- too busy to do so now -- but the typography...
A side note -- I have on my desk the peculiar WaveLAN Mac/PowerBook adapter. This is not the daisy-chainable AAUI adapter, which was also a part of the WaveLAN lineup. Instead, it's a daisy-chainable 10baseT adapter that plugs into the printer port, and uses a "High-speed serial driver for...
Wanted to follow up and say that this card works just fine with System 6.06 and 6.08 in an original LC. The CDEV will only load if a monitor is connected to the Pivot card.
The CDEV will give you the version of the ROM installed on the About, however you can't directly screen-capture this...
Sure! Odd brand name (as with anything on Amazon these days) but it has the smaller-than-40mm size most packs do not:
BLUE GARLIC DVD Rubber Belt 20mm... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T8KDL4W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I mean this very kindly, but please be very careful. You are now up to three or four "fireworks" events, and it's very important to remember you are dealing with voltage which can easily kill or maim you. I think you should seek out a known-good power supply from a seller on eBay and let other...
This is really fascinating and I've never heard of it before!
"NeuNet & Phonenet" are listed in ad in a 1989 issue of Apple 2000.
There is a brief article on NeuNet in Byte in February of 1989: "Link Your Macs into a LAN".
MacUser UK mentions NeuNet as late as 1993.
Continuing the saga of my WGS 8150/110, I was curious if the 600i was working or not. This drive has an unfortunate number of delicate ribbon cables, which makes disassembly and repair a bit of a gamble. Regardless, my first task was to trace down a mechanical, not electrical, problem: the tray...
