Well I got 9.1 running pretty nicely. Can't say for sure what did it. I used CPU Director to enable backside cache (I didn't have backside cache enabled every time I tried 9.1 previously, which may have soured my opinion), set to 2:1, and disable speculative execution. In the memory control...
Oh awesome. CPU Director wouldn't allow me to boot when i had a Sonnet G4 on my carrier card, so I stopped using it. But I have since replaced the G4 with a faster G3, so will give it a try again. I really like CPU Director so that makes me very happy to know it can work with the Sonnet.
I don't see a reason for it. If I'm going to multi boot, I would do significantly different OSes, like Linux, NetBSD, and OS X. Dual booting 2 slightly different versions of MacOS has no appeal to me. If for example I go 8.6 on this Mac, and I really wanna run 9.1, I would just do it on one...
I do not want to dual boot Mac versions on this computer. If I need to run a different Mac version, I will simply run it on a different Mac.
I am using a single SD card via ZuluSCSI, which can contain 6 virtual drives, presented as individual SCSI drives, each with a unique SCSI ID. I have...
Thanks for those
With an 8.6 install, is there nothing that I would want to pull from 9.1 or 9.2.x CDs? With my ZuluSCSI, I was thinking of keeping an OS 9.x ISO on it for convenience if there's anything there I'd ever want, since I get 6 SCSI IDs. But if there's nothing on those I'd want...
Thanks for all the info, I am going to go with an 8.6 install next, and pull drivers/software from newer versions as needed.
If I have a 9.2.2 iso to pull drivers/software from, would I have any need to also keep, say, a 9.1 iso? Or put another way, does the 9.1 iso have anything I might...
Do you mean machines that were originally G3/G4, or does my G3/G4 upgraded 7300 count?
Good info. I was wondering where the line was so to speak.
The 9.1 install I recently used seemed to be having issues just doing basic things, like using the file manager and launching fairly standard...
I feel like this has been probably been discussed extensively, but, I haven't quite found the info I am looking for. I am eventually going to build everything into a 9600 (well, a 9500 in an 8600 case), but for now the test machine is a 7300. Here are the specs:
RAM : 320MB
CPU...
I mean really the point of this computer is for testing bus speed, as well as testing peripherals and components for a future 9600 build. After that, I might sell it. I already have another 7300, 2x B&W G3s, a 1.42 MDD, a Mini G4, a 7200, and a 9600.
I've got that Rabbit Hole Computing SATA...
I bought this computer and all these boards for the main purpose of bus speed overclocking testing.
Also, the best CPUs I have at this very moment (that fit this machine) require bus speed overclocking to hit their rated speed. I have a 450MHz 750L with an 8x multiplier, would need over 56MHz...
I have a total of 4 boards that I want to see how far they can go with bus speed. So far, I have only tested one (a 7300/200). I will test the 8600/250 next, and once I do something about a PSU, I can test the 7600 and 9500.
Currently still working with the 7300. All memory slots are...
Cool, I ordered the 1st combo card I posted. Might buy the 2nd too, tho that one doesn't appear to have an NEC chip.
I'll probably get the gigabit card as well. Thanks for the tip, I did find the driver, and it seems like the chipset is well documented for OS 9 use.
Will probably look at TV...
The machines are a 7300 and a 9600 running OS 9.1
I'd like a USB/FW combo card. Anything to watch out for here? Anyone have experience with these?:

Would I need to hunt down drivers for these? At least the first one...
I tried, but the majority of the pins are bent. There's not un-bent neighbor pins I can align to. At least 2 have pins that have detached or broken internally. What gets me is they were advertised as "collectors items" and in "excellent condition"
There's 5 modules in this box, they need to...
I believe there was a special OS 9 installer for G4s; is that what you used?
You might consider running something like OS X 10.4 or 10.3, which can run a Classic environment.
Maybe painting is a better idea? My understanding is the ABS becomes brittle because plasticizers or something leach out of it; perhaps painting would seal these in?
