Just got my first 68k laptop. What do I need to know?

I asked chansbattery.ca to rebuild a PB500 series battery back in 2020. They replied promptly to tell me no, they can’t do it. I have yet to find anyone who can rebuild a PB500 battery. If anyone finds such an outfit, please share.

    resize microscopic finder window

Wow weird, no. The Finder shouldn’t do that. It should fix any bogus folder rectangles. Just to ask … have you tried clicking very precisely at the bottom right edge of that thing and trying to resize it? The grow region of Finder windows, I’m pretty sure, extends all the way to the...

Making a Game in Assembly with MDS 2.0

by the way @jkheiser I also like that Condition Code DA but haven’t been able to figure out all the info. Like for example, what do the little filled vs hollow circles mean? Do you have a copy of the documentation by chance? (The DA says you get a copy if you pay the shareware fee…)

Which "useless" extensions are not worth the RAM and time to load nowadays?

You’re right, I’m wrong. I had thought Conflict Catcher was licensed by Apple and a more full-featured version continued as a commercial product. But that isn’t true. I think maybe Extensions Manager was always just … Extensions Manager? Here’s a version with a screenshot running under...

Which "useless" extensions are not worth the RAM and time to load nowadays?

Comflict Catcher, I think (which was actually a commercial product at one point)

Making a Game in Assembly with MDS 2.0

Ooo Steve Reeve is definitely getting a play. I was a World Builder myself circa 1990.

Making a Game in Assembly with MDS 2.0

One thing I couldn’t resist, I noticed this in your video: I’m sure you know but maybe worth mentioning you don’t need ApplScratch here? Just push your rect on the stack, then pass the SP to _DrawPicture (and adjust the SP when you’re done). Example: Your way saves 8 bytes on the stack...

Making a Game in Assembly with MDS 2.0

Stumbling belatedly on this thread. I love this project. Writing a nice and very sleek game for a 9” B&W Mac in MDS assembly is pretty high on my wish list, too (though right now I’m obsessed with writing system extensions for 7.0 in THINK C). Following along with great interest. How’d you...

Adjusting sound volume with keyboard shortcuts on 68k Macs

Excellent thanks! Garden upload coming once I get to 1.0 …. Next version will be a little faster due to saving the ‘speaker’ bitmap in a resource (currently drawn on the fly).

Adjusting sound volume with keyboard shortcuts on 68k Macs

Thanks @tashtari that’s extremely helpful. Being new to working with these devices … is the right protocol to check the original device address, or the device handler ID, or both? I assume just checking the ADB address == 0x07 is not sufficient, since if someone had multiple ADB devices...

Adjusting sound volume with keyboard shortcuts on 68k Macs

Thanks for this. I think this means the keyboard is using ADB address 0x07 for the audio buttons (0x0C is just the ADB “talk” command byte). Which is interesting, ADB thanks the audio buttons are a totally separate device. I wonder if it’s always true that audio buttons come in as ADB address...

    Introducing: OptionPageUp INIT

Here’s a little INIT I wrote this weekend that does one simple thing: It turns a keypress of Option + Up Arrow (or Down Arrow) into Page Up (or Page Down). Just drag it into the System Folder under Systems 6/7 (Extensions folder under System 7+) and restart. It should work fine with...

Consulair 68K MDS 2.0 complete in box

Here you go. Perhaps you or someone could publish in the appropriate archival spot? I apologize for the rough photo-scan quality but this was the only way it was getting done anytime soon :)

Love that you checked that. Thanks! Yeah I will scan that supplement in the near future. Thanks for the reminder.

Consulair 68K MDS 2.0 complete in box

Finally got around to imaging these disks and taking a look at what’s on there — this self-identifies as “version 2.1” of Consulair MDS, so I wonder if it’s materially different than the Apple-branded 2.0 that I’ve seen before (and uploaded to the Garden a few years ago). Unexcitingly, those...

Adjusting sound volume with keyboard shortcuts on 68k Macs

Update: I was able to get an AAK on eBay for $49 shipped so will try to make this work with the volume keys as soon as it arrives. Configurable key choices are in the works too, but I got distracted just making the error handling routines, which nobody but me will ever see or look at...

Consulair 68K MDS 2.0 complete in box

( I love that Tribble is there, though not to quibble, I would say he again works at Apple. He worked elsewhere in the ‘80s and ‘90s I am pretty sure. https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2002/01/09Bud-Tribble-Joins-Apple-as-Vice-President-of-Software-Technology/ )

@jkheiser where’d you get that physical copy of MacASM? Been looking for that one. Saw one on eBay a couple years ago for like $400 and passed. Nothing since that I can recall.

Adjusting sound volume with keyboard shortcuts on 68k Macs

Yeah this happened in my testing (also in a game … Solarian II). Would you mind trying again and confirming that the system volume (in the Control Panel) is indeed set to 0 when you exit Tetris Max (great game btw)? I think what is happening unfortunately is some (maybe older, mainly) games...
