Making a Game in Assembly with MDS 2.0

That’s a handy utility routine. If you wanted to zealously optimize, you could even ASR #2, D0 to divide it by 4 and then use CLR.L to loop thru 4 times as fast, then handle the last 0-3 bytes as a special case. Hopefully you don’t have enough globals for that to matter though. 😊 If you...

Today’s the Day: Critical Productivity Enhancement for Finder 6.0-7.x

Thanks! And your question is on point @pax . Since I’ve written a handful of these little guys, I’ve thought about this too! Just my opinion: If users are likely to use multiple features scattered across various extensions and/or the extensions are pretty small, it’s probably better to...

Today’s the Day: Critical Productivity Enhancement for Finder 6.0-7.x

Version 1.0.1 now tweaked to be faster and tested to work under System 6 now available on the Garden. Shown here under 6.0.8: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/today-s-the-day Credit where due, I was inspired by this episode of Mac Folklore Radio, wherein Derek reads David Pogue praising Mac...

Today’s the Day: Critical Productivity Enhancement for Finder 6.0-7.x

Okay maybe not critical. But I like it. Drop this in your System Folder so that the Finder under 7.x (and probably 6.x and probably, I think, back much farther than that) will show files modified today or yesterday as “Today” or “Yesterday,” like Mac OS 8 does. (At least, I’ve heard it does...

Making a Game in Assembly with MDS 2.0

Thanks @jkheiser for the tips, I now have a MAME setup running for the first time. It works! BUT … I could use a little advice if you know the answers … 1. When I emulate a maciicx or maciici, the mouse motion is extremely jerky. (The mouse usually moves 80+ pixels at a time so is basically...

Help getting MacOS 7.6 on SE/30

You don’t need an 040 (7.5.5 absolutely flies with a 50MHz Diimo 030) but I would recommend an accelerator of some kind to run 7.5.5 in an SE/30, yes.

That’s not a 7.0.1 disk tools floppy. That looks like some flavor of System 6.

    System 6.0.8 + AppleShare + Games = Issue

These games (at least in their original incarnations) used the alternate screen buffer in high memory (above BufPtr). If anything else is sitting at that location in high memory, for example a debugger, they can’t allocate the alternate screen buffer and won’t work. Very probably AppleShare...

Adjusting sound volume with keyboard shortcuts on 68k Macs

Cool! Will check those out. Noting the first one is from 1990, it is likely that it doesn’t work with modern systems or audio devices, since it probably uses the old SetSoundVolume routine which really just controls the level of the system beep.

Adjusting levels in Photoshop changes both image brightness and desktop brightness

I think, to be both quick and precise, PhotoShop 3 is manipulating the video gamma tables perhaps? (This is for example how one does a quick and efficient “fade to black” in a ‘90s Mac video game.) This can be done instantly because it just changes how the hardware maps pixmaps to display, not...

Making a Game in Assembly with MDS 2.0

Looks awesome (of course Macsbug can do all that too — but it must be very elegant to be able to do it from “outside the box” in parallel with running your app). I will have to give it a try!

One more question @jkheiser did I read right that you are using MAME? How is that going? Are there good docs anywhere on how to set up MAME to emulate a 68K Mac? I have struggled to find anything really straightforward.

Mini vMac for iPad … interrupt switch?

No jail breaking needed but you need to build it yourself in XCode. Yes, MiniVMac emulates the whole machine and enables running debuggers like Macsbug which is critical when doing dev work. Basilisk doesn’t, to my knowledge, allow that.

Mini vMac for iPad … interrupt switch?

Yeah it’s just a setting to switch machine types. Swipe right with two fingers and scroll down to change machine type.
