I think people love to poop on MS BASIC (including QuckBasic, which was really just MS BASIC 4.0) because (1) it’s Microsoft and (2) the Macintosh Basic saga is fairly sordid for those familiar (see folklore.org). These are not terrible reasons. But it was always, I thought, a solid and...
Isn’t Chipmunk Basic a command line thing? I would definitely recommend MS BASIC 2.0 over it (line numbers not required, full GUI edit tool with prettyprinting, quite nice built-in Toolbox support). MS BASIC 2.0 will run great on your Mac Plus and so will, probably, QuickBasic, which I agree...
Apple Garamond is a variant of ITC Garamond, condensed and with a taller x-height (clearly visible in @MacUp72’s image above), and actually predates Adobe Garamond by several years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typography_of_Apple_Inc.#Apple_Garamond
At least Wikipedia says Adobe Garamond was...
What makes you think your Plus is too hot? I thought received wisdom was an unaccelerated Plus without extra gear (internal HD etc) stuffed in there doesn’t need additional cooling.
It’s not a question of new a Font Manager exactly.
The Chicago font has FONT resource ID = 0. The 128K ROMs added the Chicago font to ROM (and also tweaked the various toolbox calls including QuickDraw text drawing routines to check the ROM for needed resources “first”, using a low memory...
Not aware of any retailer per se - OtherWorldComputing used to sell at least SIMMs that would work in a Mac Plus but don’t appear to have any right now.
Not sure why you are opposed to eBay but you don’t have to buy from a random stranger on there - a couple reputable eBay ”stores” sell RAM in...
Not quite - early System versions did use Chicago even on the 128K Mac. However the Mac Plus (and 512K enhanced) ROMs were the first to include Chicago in the ROM, which is why the Mac Plus version of Mini vMac shows you Chicago no matter what font is on your System disk.
It looks like the...
Sorry to necrothread but I want to clarify this because I think this post is misleading (and even confusing my own memory):
I am pretty sure I got this switchless adapter to work with a IIci using a RasterOps video card (which I mentioned in this thread but didn’t explicitly say I was using...
My first stop would actually be nicking them. The Susan Kare MacPaint palette icons were pretty ubiquitous in the classic Mac era. I would personally grab that pencil probably, and use the Finder’s “small icon” version of the trash can for a wastebasket. That way you end up pixel-perfect vs...
I’ve never used RealBasic but does it allow for calling out to Toolbox routines? The Toolbox call you need for this is OpenRF (which is a glue routine provided by the dev environments) or _PBOpenRF (in ROM). If you can access either of those, you should be all set. Documented in the File...
Yeah, I think it’s pretty weird to trash the SE/30. Aside from the fact that they are expensive – which indeed they are — the SE/30 is by far the most powerful and expandable Mac ever produced in the original all-in-one form factor. So if the original form factor appeals to you – which it does...
I love that I just went to that link on my iPad and it tried to play the Mac OS SDK CD like it was audio …
Anyway thanks @David Cook , will check that out. (Not by listening to the binary data though)
Pretty basic question here but basically all my software dev has been for the Sys 7 era …
What’s the gold standard documentation for the Toolbox as it existed in the MacOS 9 era? New Inside Mac printed volumes date to the early ‘90s, I’m sure newer (for example) File Manager* calls were...
I am always excited to see anyone build new dev tools for vintage Macs!
To some extent though I think this is a solved problem: have you seen SuperCard? https://www.macintoshrepository.org/1875-supercard-1-x
It was basically HyperCard++ and included full color support, ability to build a...
That’s right, it’s covered briefly in Tech Note 247 and there’s even some pretty amusing evangelism about this in there too. All you can really do is reorder your INITs (by changing their first letter to re-alphabetize them, probably) such that these offenders load either first or last...
This. Get good at recognizing the rear port connector. Then set an alert and check out literally every SE/30 for sale on eBay. You will eventually find one for sale where the seller doesn’t know what he or she has.
It sure looks lIke one, and it has the grayscale connector there. That’s the deal of the century! You’ll need the a neck board of course if you want to use internal grayscale, but those are easily cloned.
