Weird Facts about the Menu Manager

I am writing an INIT that allows hiding/showing the Balloon Help/Apple Guide menu at any time. (Helium lets you do this, but requires a restart. Mine will work without even actually installing the INIT.) It will be released very soon. This involved learning a lot about the undocumented weedy...

Announcing MacTasks - "To do" list for the classic Mac

Yeah that’s really very glaringly dumb, I always wondered about that. (before 6.0.3 there isn’t even a natural way to get a pointer to the task record from inside your callback, you have to stick a DC.L in your code and stuff your A5 into there …from 6.0.3 on at least you can grab a pointer to...

Announcing MacTasks - "To do" list for the classic Mac

Also not a PPC guy but I recall you don’t have to worry about the A5 whatnots when writing PPC code, I’m pretty sure access to application globals from Toolbox callbacks Just Works in PPC code.

What’s happening to my 400k disks?

That makes sense but I would not expect the failure mode of a bad disk read to be an address error (#02)? A virus sounds likely EXCEPT it sounds like the Mac Plus started up from these 400K disks without ever (for example) running an attached SCSI drive. Is that right? If so, it’s a mystery...

    Faster MacOS by patching NewPtrClear?

Nice discussion of QuickDraw here: http://preserve.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.04/04.06/Hertzfeld/index.html

I think it’s great if he’s selling the DVDs and hopefully making a few extra bucks from doing so. I am going to ask if I can buy a set. I also hope the Vault comes back online.

Infocom Trinity - How to make a disk that is playable on Macintosh 512K

It’s not copy-protected, no. I don’t think any of the Infocom games were. I am familiar with .moof … what’s .a2s?

Infocom Trinity - How to make a disk that is playable on Macintosh 512K

I do have an original Trinity game disk (pretty sure I have all the graybox Infocom editions except Plundered Hearts…), and yes it works on a 512k Macintosh.

Great post. I love HyperDrives, I have two somewhere in the basement - maybe time to dig em out.

    Faster MacOS by patching NewPtrClear?

I don’t think so … if I’m reading the chart right, allocating 1K a thousand times (so, call it allocating 1MB once) takes about 2 seconds using Apple’s implementation on an 030? (Nobody was allocating megabytes on a 68000.) Again unless you’re doing this in a loop (which presumably nobody...

    Faster MacOS by patching NewPtrClear?

Interesting write up, thanks for sharing this. My assumption is that nobody particularly thought NewPtrClear needed to be a super optimized routine, because continually allocating cleared memory in a tight loop on the heap is probably not something one does very much? Compare with _BlockMove...

Infocom Trinity - How to make a disk that is playable on Macintosh 512K

if it’s an original unEnhanced 512K, HFS won’t work. It would be extremely odd for a 400K disk to be HFS-formatted.

I don’t know much about FloppyEmus, but if the disk image works in Mini vMac, it is good. I strongly suspect an issue with either the FE (equipment or setup) or (less likely) your Mac.

    I'm working on an RPG!

It’s beautiful. I love it. I always wanted to creature a great Mac RPG. I assembled a basic game engine and outsourced a beautiful collection of color icons in 1993. Maybe one of these decades I will follow in your footsteps …. Beautiful graphics. How did you create them?

    MacGUI Downloads gone

MacGUI’s download section is a treasure trove of obscure, very-early-Mac software including random bits and pieces of ancient dev tools, so this is real shame and I hope he comes around. Thanks @cheesestraws for sharing that link. It is certainly surprising to me to describe “commoditization”...

    Mac Plus Bridge Machine

Aladdin Software’s decision in the 90s to make periodic updates to the Stuffit format that simply caused earlier versions to silently die is my single biggest frustration with the vintage Mac experience. Stuffit is and always was an awful bloated product after 1.5.1 and nobody should use it.
