"Cleaned" Apple 800k floppy drive from Macintosh SE still problematic

Ahh. I'm such a numpty. The drive is fine! The problem was the extension that runs my "christmas present to me" MacEffects/Bolle Performer accelerator card! I've only just installed this card otherwise I would have mentioned it when I posted this. However, I added the extension some weeks ago...

"Cleaned" Apple 800k floppy drive from Macintosh SE still problematic

It fails almost immediately. But when writing a DiskCopy image (using DiskCopy 6.2.2) everything goes fine every time and the ejected disk mounts fine when popped back in. Thanks. That's clear.

"Cleaned" Apple 800k floppy drive from Macintosh SE still problematic

I would also add that dsdd disks formatted as 800k on the Quadra can be used fine on the SE.

"Cleaned" Apple 800k floppy drive from Macintosh SE still problematic

I cleaned and re-lubricated the 800k drive from my Macintosh SE. I followed this guide on YouTube. Before I cleaned the drive it very rarely read a floppy. After cleaning I can read most floppies and I've been able to write 800k install images that I could not before. But I have two problems...

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Unfortunately not! The cupboard on the right was an attempt to get all my cables down to a reasonable number. But the cupboard on the left is purely boring paperwork!

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Just an update. I gave into temptation and bought myself a PicoPSU and a MacSE adaptor from dekunukem. I got a decent 12v powerbrick, but there's only a BlueSCSI instead of any real drives. I've added another PSU to the "mustrecap" pile together with my Quadra 610's. So I really must do them...

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Hmm. I added a few LEDS to the socket (from a breadboard). They all lit up and I took 5.3v and 10.45v. But then I heard a "zzzz" and the fuse blew again. So I guess there is short somewhere in the PSU on the 230v side and it was not condensation.

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Ahh! I did not realise that! This was not under load at all. So if I plug in a 12v bulb to simulate a load I should get a more accurate reading?

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

I replaced the fuse and tested. The voltages are all over the place. The 12v pins are giving 0.5v and the 5v is 0.2v. I guess the caps are gone! Time for plan B!

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

I'm sure I can come up with something to test it.

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Yes it was the fuse in the PSU. I spent 10 mins testing the socket and switch before noticing the very obviously blown fuse! Unfortunately I only have a 5A version of those glass fuses. Plus until I know what caused the fuse to blow not sure I want to put one back in. However, it has been quite...

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Not at all patronising as I've done the same! Fairly recently I lost most of a morning checking a battery charger that would not turn on, without checking the fuse in the extension lead plug. What's worst is that the extension lead had been left outside and the plug was slightly damp so it...

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Thanks a lot for all those suggestions. I will check them all. To my naive thoughts they do sound a more plausible cause than the PSU failing. There were no symptoms during those 30 mins until it was completely dead (it had been turned off for an hour or two before powering back on).

I've got myself a failing recapped Quadra 610!

Thanks. I will do so. However, after making that post the Quadra has never failed to boot once! I'm sure I've not fixed the problem but for now I'll wait until it resurfaces again and just enjoy using it!

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Thanks a lot. I guess a recap of the PSU is on the cards. A shame I only got to use my nice "new" Macintosh SE for just 30 mins :-) First time I've used a compact Mac in well over three decades!

    Thanks. It's a Sony CR-44.

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Just got myself a Macintosh SE yesterday (finally!). I bought it on eBay and there was a risk in shipping (which I was OK with). However, when it arrived it turned on fine (although the internal SCSI drive is dead). It boots fine from a 700k System 6.0.8 floppy. So I was very happy. However...

I've got myself a failing recapped Quadra 610!

I've just taken the logic board out to my workbench. I reflowed each leg of the power connector (with plenty of flux). Then I cleaned each side of the IOSB chip with a cotton bud and isopropanol. When dry I then added plenty of flux to one side (the closest to the cap) and reflowed each leg as...

I've got myself a failing recapped Quadra 610!

So I removed the case this morning to add a few files to the SDcard in the Blue SCSI. After replacing the card and repalcing the case it stopped booting. So powers on but no chimes. I tested the voltages and they are the same as before: 5.12v 11.94 So I guess this means that it's not the PSU...

I've got myself a failing recapped Quadra 610!

Well since taking those voltage readings the Quadra has behaved itself perfectly! It has not failed to boot once. I've put the case back on and will try and use it daily to see if the issue resurfaces. How annoying :) Ah yes, thank you! It's the one with the label IOSB. Sorry I did not notice...
