That's pretty awesome and a LOT of cash upfront, but if even it there had been only a small fraction in working order then ~$7/each is a steal for sure. $60/each seems like a bit of a stiff hike to me, considering the base margin (ignoring time/battery cost).
basic approximation: $7 each IN =...
That's a litttle bit unfair. These computers, and their plastic parts, are over 20+ years old now. Nothing is perfect, everything breaks down and plastics are just less durable than metal.
Surely you're aware of this -> https://github.com/tmk/tmk_keyboard?I know it's meant for ADB -> USB, but that means that the code has to understand some portion of the adb spec to communicate with the device I assume.
I don't know much about this stuff, but the biggest hurdle is that your...
If you decide to do it yourself, just be patient. Being impatient while soldering is the best way to screw it up. If you think the board/pcb is too hot or it appears to be melting or visibly did coloring then back it off and let it cool down. You'll probably wants some pliers or other tool to...
Setting up the network should be easy as there should be a control panel (TCP/IP I think) that controls that. The best way to get connected is probably either internet sharing with another computer directly (which will probably require a crossover cable) or hooking it directly to your router...
I would point out that CRTs are glass screens and so as far as I know they don't need any kind of special cleaning wipes. Whatever is suitable for cleaning glass in general should work fine, although you obviously would prefer stuff that doesn't streak or leave residue and again you should avoid...
I've heard that disconnecting an ADB device while the computer is on can damage the controller chip due to some kind of issue with the design. I forget where though. Presumably if the switch was designed right it should be safe, but otherwise I wouldn't test it.
I'd still say you try a new PRAM battery. If you have one that you aren't worried about loss of whatever data it's backing you could swap it from that mac into this one and see if anything changes.
If it was just a hard drive problem then you would know by now. A faulty/damaged hard drive or...
It was a different world in those days and people had semi-legitimate reasons to want to know who was connecting to their computer. Especially when it comes to illegal activity. There wasn't a DMCA or safe harbor or anything that protected them if you used their system to pirate data/music...
If you've got a long wait for delivery you might leave it plugged in for a few days and try again. I don't know if no battery is any different from a basically dead battery though,
If you've got any other macs of a similar vintage then you could probably use Localtalk and a serial cable to get file sharing. Just as an aside, maybe you could BinHex the file and split into separate text files of the max length that will fit on a floppy and then recombine them on the other...
It could be the PRAM battery, I know I initially had some issues with my Bondi iMac G3 not starting right (as in no start/video at all) until it had been plugged in for a while that seemed to go away when I replaced that battery. If you replace the battery (good common sense at this point unless...
Good luck then. I have an LC II, but with an Asante ethernet card I never could get to work afaik. I had to re-seat the rom chip just to get it to do anything. Back when my Power mac 6100 worked I briefly worked with Netscape 4 I think (4.0.4 is apparently the last version that will work with...
The issue is that modem is simply a direct line between two computers. Basically one computer calls and the other picks up the phone. You still need software to respond to anything the caller tries to transmit or to transmit stuff yourself. I'm fairly sure the simplest scenario involves two...
Honestly not being able to use the internet on these machines is, in some waus, really more of a software than a hardware issue in a lot of cases. Operating Systems that recieve no updates or bugfixes can quickly become mired in known problems not to mention buggy drivers and very old browsers...
It's a BIG pile of ifs, but if you can find someone with a Mac of the same era (probably the iMac and maybe the powerbook --- visually it looks like the G3 models) and you can both get a hold of and run Age of Empires II for mac (*cough* "abandonware" *cough*) then you might be able to play it...
I was mostly curious if the efforts at an organized compilation of the people doing stuff and the website were ever coming back (they seem to be gone atm). The forums, from what I've seen weren't really part of it beyond announcements and the occasional query about things concerning hardware and...
As noted the iMac has Ethernet and shouldn't be too hard to get on a network, although I have a Bondi one (originally 233mhz I think) and I remember having some trouble getting it to connect. Might have been cabling things wrong, but straight up internet connection sharing (and maybe static...
It's a little hard to imagine this sort of challenge being doable, especially with anything less than a G5 (PPC) or Intel that's clocked less than 1ghz. Then there's the reality that we use the internet so much these days that it's very apparent how important a functional web browser is. The...
