    The Macintosh Garden

[i wasn't criticizing the policy.]  I was just clarifying that I wasn't criticizing the idea of copyright... although that particular point is something I have been thinking a lot about because of my interest in old Macs.  It's an interesting synthesis of subject matters.  And I did enjoy your...

    The Macintosh Garden

I'm not questioning the idea of copyright generally at all, I'm suggesting that within software fields specifically a shorter period of protection is going to have to be the way forward.  The system is beyond unworkable if hardware becomes obsolete year to year or if a 'vital' software company...

    The Macintosh Garden

Yea it's conceptually weird.  But in theory copyrights last way too long for the tech world.  (It's something I actually may specialize in or research heavily in law school purely out of curiosity.  It's not a workable system in the long-run.) However, a lot of the stuff that comes up on this...

    The Macintosh Garden

Correct.  The updates for 7.6 are up.  Someone had mentioned the 7.1 issue, sorry for the redundancy.  The Updates posted under 7.1 are for 7.1, then, and are not 7.1 themselves? (i.e. -...

    The Macintosh Garden

Interestingly... although this post is in the wrong category... it looks like everything up to System 7.5.5 is still being freely offered by Apple on their servers (although the links are now obscured) - as are all the OS 8 and 9 updates (but not OS 8 or 9 itself).  Meaning any links to...

    Power Macintosh 7200/120

I haven't found speed to affect burning.  However, TransMac (with good images) tends to be very effective (via Windows).  That's not always true.  I've had really weird burn failures also; I've never been able to systematically track why. I think the Toast option mentioned may only be relevant...

    Dual-Boot Partition Corruption (?)

I'm afraid rebuilding the (relevant) volume using the Norton Tools CD did not work. I have not yet been able either a) to find a copy of the NUM Emergency Tools disk that will boot on the 7100, or b ) a copy of Norton 3-2-1 that will expand with Stuffit on the 7100. As with all things of this...

    Dual-Boot Partition Corruption (?)

    So what's the fix?

    Dual-Boot Partition Corruption (?)

I setup a dual-boot machine in my 7100, because the most recent HD in it came with three partitions.  7.6.1 was installed on one and the other two were blank.  I put 8.5 on another one and upgraded to 8.6 yesterday. I booted into 7.6.1 for the first time in about a week today (meaning after I...

recommend a older laptop to me?

By release date it'd be the IIx, going by everymac - SE/30 was released exactly 4 months later.

recommend a older laptop to me?

Obviously... (Probably the SE -- I didn't know the Mac II shipped with an 800k drive also.)  Hence a floppy bridge from a PC to a Color Classic will allow portable use of a SuperDrive... (plan for the future.  in Boy Scouts it was "Always be prepared.")

recommend a older laptop to me?

And the Color Classic has an 800k floppy drive??
  15. R

recommend a older laptop to me?

This actually makes no sense if the idea is actually to get a bridge from a PC to the Color Classic... Mraroid, get a $10-20 USB floppy drive and use Sheepshaver.  Save your third quota'ed computer for something else.

You might be able to mod a cd burner with the 1400. But you are better off with an external SCSI drive most likely.

    PowerBook 3400c Repair Stories

Is there a size cap on uploading photos?  It's not a big deal it's just somewhat awkward to keep downloading. Also, your board's main damage is surprisingly far to the right.  I've pointed out (above) some damage farther left, but just keep in mind that whole area (like the upper left quarter)...
