Some further digging. The appletalk module does not seem to be the issue. However...

After watching the latest BlueSCSI video by ActionRetro I had to do some tinkering...
I used my Mac SE/30 with 8MB RAM and System 7.5.5 and HDT 1.8 to compare the speeds of the following devices:
IBM H3171-S2 - 160MB SCSI drive from 1993:

Oooh, this sounds great! I will for sure have a look and install it as soon as it's out. RaSCSI is definitely the most fun project I've played with for a while. Loving it a lot.
Thanks. I did add rascsi_bridge to atalkd.conf and restart the Pi without success.
nbplkup returns "nbp_lookup: Cannot assign requested address" so I guess that's my problem.
/edit: I added "PAPD_RUN=yes" to /etc/default/netatalk and restarted netatalk.
Now nbplkup returns:

I am currently having trouble with AppleShare over AppleTalk (DDP) after going back and forth through the Wiki and reinstalling RaSCSI. Perhaps you can help me out.

Thanks for the link. This seems to be the same driver that I found. Unfortunately I do not have a compatible display, but that driver does seem to work in System 6.
A drop of oil on the stepper motor bearing might indeed bring the MiniScribe back. Definitely worth a try. Also while you're inside the machine pull or replace the PRAM battery.
