Thank you all for your nice words it was a fun journey!
‘A working miniscribe’ - I still haven’t come across one of those 😂!
Any tips on reviving the one shown in the video? Shall I assume it’s permanently damaged or is there some procedures you’d recommend?
I've spoiled the ending a bit here but here is part 1 of my repair. I trust this is not in violation of the rules of this forum.
Also please note what I said at the beginning of the video: this is my first Macintosh so please excuse my ignorance on how I approached the repair! :)
I think I found a better way: I am using an HD20 image which I can mount on mini vmac and where I can load any image. Then I transfer the image on the FEMU and run it on the Macintosh.
Still, if someone can tell me how to deal with the non-working images on the FEMU, that would be great. Thanks!
The description says 800K and the resulting extracted file is 3-400KB. EMU shows a question mark when selected. The EMU should load them anyways as 1440K - which would then not be recognised by the SE.
I have two SCSI drives, one I'm trying to test (miniscribe) and a Quantum.
The floppy drive...
Hi all,
I am having a hard time finding images for my SE as it's a 800K version - so all the images have to be 800K.
I wanted to use Hard Disk Toolkit and I found the below:
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/fwb-hard-disk-toolkit-178
I tried all the 800K downloads but the EMU says "Disk image...
HI there,
I have a dying miniscribe - probably not worth of resuscitating but I'd love to try.
The stepper seems fine, I put some lubricant on the bearing as usual!
However it would misbehave badly when trying to run anything or re-install the OS.
I managed to run Apple Personal Diagnostic...
Today I socketed both the VIA and the ADB. It turns out that a replacement PIC ADB fixed BOTH the mouse and the booting failure!
I guess when I saw the ADB bus not doing anything at boot - which was when the Mac was failing to boot - it was indeed the ADB failing to work and stopping the boot...
Thanks, I'll definitely go with the VIA first as I can decode the correct keyboard keystrokes on the ADB side so that seems ok (it doesn't mean that the VIA side works though).
If that doesn't fix the booting issue, is there a way to find out what it could be? Anything that could be removed...
I thought a video might help.
Today it took MANY resets and reboots to come up alive - never done that before. The Mac was cold - literally. I will try identifying the issue with cold spray/hot air station but I feel it's the VIA. I do see activity on the data lines of the processor but I don't...
Thank you! I guess I can let you know once I test it!
I have a TL866II - any recommendation from anybody about that? I read there might be some issues with that particular programmer?
Hello @tashtari
That's an impressive job indeed! I might need to replace my ADB chip on my SE so I might give it a go. However, someone suggested I could do with a PIC16F87, would that work anyways?
Thank you!
Hi all,
The same Macintosh SE I have been discussing here is showing a weird and intermittent fault.
About 50% of times it's powered up, it BONGs, the screen turns on with the grey pattern and about 17 seconds later the pattern gets brighter, I hear a click from the speaker, the mouse pointer...
I've found this amazing video and the author has the chip I found on the BOM which can be found here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QhHpDew4saFxvt82W2TkdpnNA2W7tLZhe53Et64gpdY/edit.
So it seems the answer is yes.
BTW, I am based in the UK, if someone needs some of those VIA chips...
