.. it's a hangover from the IBM PC world which had serial, bus, PS/2 and eventually USB mice. It''s a non-serial mouse because the phased motion detection and mouse button lines are all wired in parallel and doesn't plug into the serial ports. Also the pins that the signals go to on the SCC...

    Mac-VGA adaptor help!

Did you remember to also move the screen? :) I have an old Mac-VGA adapter without switches, and it really is just a VGA adapter, it won't do anything except 640x480. The adapters "with switches" have a bank of either 6 or 10 DIP switches on them.

    A/UX distinctives...

No need, we have Mac OS X. Unix on the bottom, Mac on top, supports Macintosh file systems. There is no doubt about it! I've even run it on a IIvx headless. I do collect UNIXes, and have AIX on i386 & PPC, AUX, HPUX on PARISC, SunOS on 68k & Sparc, Solaris on Sparc & i386, IRIX...

I concur, I've obvously missed something. Perhaps it's people who spend their time looking for things to be offended by.

It's not even a serial mouse, it takes the raw phased output from the opto-electrical motion detectors.

    Pre Emptive Multitasking in Classic

One 68k ThreadsLib happily supported pre-emptive multitasking. But you had to play the game and could only call interrupt safe MacOS APIs, which ruled out QuickDraw and anything that allocated memory. You could do plenty with device and network drivers. On PowerPC they dropped the idea because...

You have to start somewhere! You are more likely to strangle yourself with the mouse cord than electrocute yourself with it. BTW, don''t take the Mac itself apart. 8-o

    Pre Emptive Multitasking in Classic

The standard ThreadsLib from Apple provides pre-emptive multitasking on 68k and it's a standard part of the operating system. Programs have to be written to use it, and most of the operating itself will collapse in a heap if you try calling from pre-emptive threads.

Get the biggest, clunkiest one you can find so it should be easiest to work with. The Inside Mac document gives you the spec of what it needs to do and connector pinout. Judicious probing with an oscilloscope should tell you where the appropriate signals are within the mouse.

M0001/w/etc, Keyboard and Mouse Schematic and more info?

Can easily be done. You need the guts of an old mechanical mouse and by-pass any embedded serial microcontroller so that the actual V+H sense wires go to the connector. The mac itself does the movement phase detection and button debouncing.

M0001/w/etc, Keyboard and Mouse Schematic and more info?

You need both unless you intend to do all your writing with "KeyCaps" and "Cut & Paste". That said you can do surprisingly alot with just a mouse. At least you aren't going to get "No keyboard - press F1 to continue".

Finding an original keyboard without numeric keypad would be more important! The mice are the same as for all models upto the Mac Plus.
