Is there a Laserwriter driver version that doesn't use Localtalk?

If your LaserJet has a serial interface, you might be able to get the LaserWriter software to cooperate. It's usually available as part of the System Software disk sets (after 2.x)

    File Transfer over Serial?

Yup! Installing a modem into a CommSlot, CommSlot II, or into the modem slot on a beige G3 personality card will disable the "modem" serial port on the Mac's logic board. On Macs that shipped from Apple with a modem installed in one of these slots, there is a blank plate or plastic plug...

    GPU for Power Mac G4

http://themacelite.wikidot.com/compatibility Is a useful resource for what you're looking to do. See footnote 5 for Mac OS 9 compatibility on the chart. There's a handy buying guide as well that will help you find a flashable card. In Nvidia's line up, the GeForce 4 Ti 4600 is the highest...

Strange and different: 1987 Mac 40SC Enclosed SCSI Tape Backup

I expect Quantum stuck with IDE only for the Bigfoot series in order to concentrate on sales volume. The larger platters allowed the drives to offer leading capacities at lower price points than the competitors, since Quantum didn't have to push the envelope with higher areal density. IIRC...

MacOS DP System Software - wth?

My guess is that Mac OS 8.6 and later don't need/use that MP init, as the Mac OS nanokernel was rewritten for 8.6, notably to add support for the Multiprocessing Services 2.0 API. I would expect multiprocessing support to be baked right in at that point.

    None-too-well Caviar Drive in a Beige G3

I'd be inclined to pull the drive and connect it to another machine. Instead of dd, which will hang/fail if it hits errors, I'd run ddrescue following a tutorial. You'll need another disk with a bunch of free space. ddrescue will make an image, skipping and marking errors as it encounters...

Would this card work in my 5300CS?

I think this is a 32-bit 3.3v CardBus device, even though it is lacking the characteristic and specified gold grounding band. The very verbose description states 32-bit CardBus in one spot, but 16/32-bit in another. Also, the mentioned JEIDA 4.2 defines 32-bit CardBus. The freezing behavior...

    Original iPhone for free

Yup. AT&T shut down their GSM, GPRS, and EDGE networks (which were operating on 850 and 1900MHz) on December 31, 2016. T-Mobile is the only remaining US national carrier operating a 2G GSM network. GSM, GPRS, and EDGE are available on 1900MHz. If the iPhone is unlocked, it should...

    Macintosh Classic no sound

Haha that Mac sounds like a kettle coming to the boil! My CC was this horrendous tone that changed pitch occasionally. It was somewhat higher than 15kHz and many other people couldn't hear it, further convincing me it was my tinnitus at the time.

    my first Lisa

The mains tripping issue sounds like a failed capacitor on the primary side of the power supply. If the circuit breaker is a conventional type, it's probably tripping because of a short across the line. Most likely suspect is an across-the-line type filter capacitor. That should be an X2 type...

    Macintosh Classic no sound

The screeching is very reminiscent of capacitor failure too. My guess is that the boards are in different stages of failure. Some seem to exhibit audio issues first, others show stability issues, and some just stop turning on suddenly without the user noticing problems first. EDIT: years ago...

    Original iPhone for free

I expect it'll boot after you replace the battery and it has a chance to charge a while. I've observed the same symptoms with both a couple original iPhones and a few iPhone 3G units. Battery replacement resolved the issue in each case. I think power on begins, displays the logo, and checks...

    MAJOR G4 Monitor Issue

Because some cards require 10.4.3 or later, make sure to use an Installer for at least that version. (Not 10.4, 10.4.1, or 10.4.2)

    MAJOR G4 Monitor Issue

You'll want to check the graphics card before deciding on which version of Mac OS X to install, as some graphics cards require 10.3.9 or 10.4.3 as a minimum. Have you tried connecting a monitor to the other card output and booting? My flashed (and unsupported) GeForce 6200 will output to VGA...

    MAJOR G4 Monitor Issue

Yup. You can look at the card itself, or boot into OS X and look in System Profiler. This is a useful reference for compatibility: http://themacelite.wikidot.com/compatibility See the reference/footnote number 5 for Mac OS 9 compatible cards. If it's a GeForce 5xxx or higher, there's no...

    MAJOR G4 Monitor Issue

This is normal behavior for graphics cards without drivers installed in Mac OS 9. You get a basic framebuffer without 2D or 3D acceleration and the OS isn't able to determine which outputs have monitors connected.

    Monitor IIc Adjustment

Horizontal width often doesn't have a potentiometer adjustment on CRTs. In that case, there's usually a coil with a ferrite slug threaded into it. It's possible to adjust using an appropriate plastic tool to turn the slug, but in some cases, it's glued, painted, or just plain stuck in place...

    G4 Internet Issues

Ah. If the powerline adapter is redirecting initial web traffic to its own landing page, said page might have a component on it (Flash, Java, JavaScript, etc.) that's not properly supported in the very old version of Firefox (≤3.6), Safari, or perhaps Flash Player or JRE installed on that...
