BMOW: Good idea with the powered hub. I don't think the 2 to 1 cable will work without hackery as the floppy drive has a non-removable cable and those 2 to 1s usually are 2 type A male to 1 type mini B male. I use my USB floppy drive with a variety of Macs, including with USB 1.x ports on my...
Dual PIIIs means it will have an i440BX, i440ZX, i820/E, or Via Apollo Pro 133A chipset. The BX and ZX should be great. Any dual Slot 1 board should have had full NT 4.0 support (except USB) as it was the contemporary SMP capable version of Windows.
I ran NT4 on some 440LX chipset Pentium II systems for quite some time. I found the driver support for NT good for the chipset and add-in cards I was using. Those included an AGP Nvidia Riva 128, some AGP ATi Rage series, and an AGP ATi Radeon 7000, along with Ensoniq AudioPCIs for audio and...
Ditching the original HDD can do a fair bit for performance too. The 80GB drive original to my 1.42GHz model was only 4200rpm which made the whole system dog slow. I put a WD 160GB 7200rpm drive in there before 2.5" PATA drives went extinct and it made a huge difference. I've started fooling...
It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong, but that something isn't working right. I have a Teac USB drive as well. If you plug in the floppy drive without a disk inserted, the motor should run and it should make ticking noises periodically as the OS polls it to see if a disk is in the...
Do note that Mac OS 8.1 does not require a full 68040. A 68LC040 (as included with the 575) will run Mac OS 8.1 just as well as a full 68040. The OS and included applications don't take advantage of the floating point unit in the full '040, only certain application software does.
As for 8.1...
Mikemike690, what a great idea with the zinc paint! Most of the products I found after reading your post are specifically intended to be used on surfaces with corrosion. "Cold galvanizing" paints seem to be a similar product.
As Unkown_K said, It's definitely worth checking the voltages with the system under load - and as it warms up to determine if a failing power supply could be a culprit too. Unknown_K, when you mentioned a power plug, were you referring to a hard drive/optical drive power plug, or another point...
Does the chassis seem to be rusting through, or is it mainly surface rust? I'm curious if anyone else has encountered similar damage and tried sandblasting the metal chassis. It seems like sandblasting, (or glass beading) cleaning, then painting or lacquering the metal chassis might have a...
System Enabler 065 adds support for the 575 to System 7.1.x. It's not needed for later system versions.
If the analog board isn't modified for 640x480 (60 or 67Hz), then the LC 575 logic board needs modification or the System file needs editing in order for the 575 board to function with the...
I'm a little stumped for specific solutions here. I'm trying to find time to get a New World PPC machine powered up and running the installer to look at what partitions the installer makes by default and to see if I can replicate the issue.
My guess is that the Telco fibre to Ethernet bridge has NAT disabled, so that the Telco supplied E900 router has a public WAN IP address. Your Telco account may be limited to one public IP, and/or the additional ports on the fibre bridge may be deactivated or reserved for specific Telco...
Have you tried setting things to DHCP since you were able to get the link light to illuminate on the card? With a manual configuration, you can have your IP and router/gateway addresses completely wrong and you won't see an error until something tries to connect. (DNS when attempting to load a...
Just to narrow things down a bit: Do you have more than one disk installed in your G5? If so, are both your Debian root partition and Yaboot installed on the first disk? Do you have Mac OS X partitions/installations on the same disk? If you post a copy or screenshot of your yaboot.conf, I'll...
Is this happening when you attempt to boot the installer, or is it post installation trying to boot from hard disk? If we're talking about booting from hard disk, it could be an issue with an incompatible partition map, or with Yaboot being installed to a location that isn't fully accessible...
