According to the infos you have a firewire port, so you can use target disk mode with it and another mac.
from the photos I dont see any really bad corrosion, apart from the darker area with the little PRAM battery connection socket..
fuses, I dont know if they all are soldered in-types, but in many cases it turned out some were indeed blown, it is littered with those fuses ( theres a thread here...
of course, a very basic design
I used CF/IDE adapters too, but my CF card isnt the best I guess, and correct formatting is key
from normal use I couldnt tell a big difference in usind a SD or CF

the battery acid must have been inside after the explosion for quite a while..it takes time to melt into the sockets etc.
the problem with ram sockets is that one drop of solder/acid in them can render those unusable, so that you must desolder/replace them completely.:rolleyes:
cant say something about the delay thing but I notice a strange behaviour on principle with SD card in my machines ( 3400c/Kanga/2400c). it works, but there is always problems with copying larger files from the pcmcia to the sd hdd or even install. I never have this with regular ide hdds in the...
I found it to be easiest/secure to unhook the two key's side latches with a fine tool like a tweezer first to unpop it from the base..
interestingly I havent broken off any of these, maybe these are made from a different kind of plastics than the ABS case..
the 5300c looks good though, how bad is the corroson inside?
the PDQ are nice machines, last year I had one with a 12" display, never seen one of those before, only 14".
in the Cardbus slot is a gemeric NEC USB2 card, worked well.
about formating, AFAIK HFS+ (or extended) is a hard drive format. Journaling is not, journaling is a feature available with HFS+ and selecting to have journaling enabled with HFS+ formatting is an option but not required.
