AvalancheSJ, it's still worth shopping around for a cheap G4 as you should be able to find one in your price bracket if you hunt. The FSB does make a fair bit of difference and the CPU is in a different league. Don't forget the slot loading iMac's are unupgradeable and really struggle with...
It's not really worth it, for around the same amount you should be able to get a low end G4 on ebay: £35 G4. Much more expandable and all you need is a cheapo monitor to go with it, they are virtually giving away 17" crt's these days.
The G4 blows the G3 out of the water when it comes to...
For £5. It has the L2 cache, PCI ethernet and a 2MB PCI graphics card of some sort. I love the look of the 6400/6500 series, much curvier then most other old macs.
^^The CPU and Ram upgrades are not the problem here, as a last resort you may need to beef up the PSU for a high end AGP card but if you stick an old Radon in, their power requirements are not high.
I haven't heard that and would doubt it's correct (maybe someone else can correct me here). IIRC the 5200's were 8x AGP so you'd have to tape a couple of the connectors which is hardly a major trial but the power draw shouldn't be an issue.
I was wondering why Deus Ex was horrible on my 9500/G3 - Radeon. Slow, graphics tearing etc. Turns out it was this nasty extension that came on the Sonnet cpu upgrade disk. Trashed it and everything runs much better.
Actually I've just realized that I need system 8 for Deus Ex (not that it's what I'm buying this machine for [;)] ]'> ) I'm also going to put in my Radeon Mac Edition (instead of the 128) from my G4 server as it's not getting used much.
The easiest way to test them is probably to leave them running something intensive like SETI@home for 24 hours. If they are still chugging along happily after that then it's a stable overclock. The only extra cooling I've ever used it is apply some thermal paste and put in a PCI slot cooling...
