If the video card failed, you could try removing the video card and seeing if you get a breaking glass sound. If this occurs, then good news: add VRAM, it was a bad card. If it doesn't, this doesn't necessarily mean you're hosed, though.
That said, I haven't heard of that sort of failure much...
They don't sell the 68K version anymore, but I'm sure the PPC version uses a similar kernel at the higher levels. The PPC version they definitely do still sell.
Speaking of, I have install media for MachTen Professional and I think it's high time to stick it on the Q800.
This is Josh Juran's work. I don't know if he hangs around here at all.
MacRelix still needs some work, but it is coming along. I'm still trying to get Tenon to open source MachTen, but they're still selling it, so they must make some amount of money from it still to this day.
What do you like better about the LC 550 board? I have a Mystic in my CC with a custom backplate and a full '040. In 7.1 it sizzles. I really need to get NetBSD on it, it was the reason I got the '040 in the first place.
I think the lack of OS 8-specific lovin' is because there's really nothing "special" about OS 8. OS 9 has Platinum, but it also has more built-in functionality to boot (especially hardware support), and was the last classic Mac OS. Conversely, while certain apps will only run in System 7, I...
It really depends on if you want to preserve OS 9 compatibility or not. Let's assume that you have a FW400 version that is OS 9 compatible and you want to run OS 9 on it also. If you do, then your big league video card options are the Radeon 9000 or the GeForce 4 Ti. The Ti is faster, but the...
My rule of thumb:
7.1 for '030 or earlier.
7.6.1 or 8.1 for '040s. (I have no use for 7.5.)
8.6 for 60x.
9.1 for Old World Macs with G3s.
9.2.2 for New World Macs that can boot OS 9.
At the risk of actually being on topic, the LC III was really the first LC I thought was worth anything. The first LC wasn't bad for what it was, but Apple really phoned it in with the LC II.
Still, I'll always pick the LC 475/Q605 any day.
I'd be very careful about having to reapply pressure all the time -- that may cause your motherboard to be damaged. Inspect the card carefully to see if it's warped or the pins are messed up or bent. If it is or you're not sure, get your money back, because you're more likely to wreck your Mac...
I have such a "holy grail" MDD (bought specifically new because it *could* boot OS 9 still). It has dual 1.8GHz Sonnet G4s in it now and is the Classilla development machine.
That's some second-hand store you have.
I have some IEEE-488 Commodore PET-era disk drives which should connect to it (with conversion since it doesn't sound like a standard GPIB connector), but they're for my PETs and I don't think there's a lot of benefit to connecting them to the LC. :lol...
Facing the machine, the power button is on the back lower right. It has a slot in it for a coin or flathead screwdriver so you can turn it and prevent the machine from powering down (or force it to power up on a power cycle -- my IIci server is set up like this).
You may need WishIWere or a...
