i had the same issue with my //c and my Mac Plus mouse - they should work but they dont.
i think it was an original spec issue where things were not quite sorted out yet.
i think later revisions did work, or, erm was it that earlier revisions worked...

well the //c bit does look the same as mine.
as does the mac cable so erm...
ok - you have the correct cables, lets say anyway. you are doing the correct thing on the //c so that leaves the mac side.
a differnt port to try?
you are using the adt send on the drop down?

Type "IN#2" and return-key; to set the standard input to modem port. So remember to stick your cable into the modem/printer port on your //c
Then:
Type "6B" and return-key; to set the speed to 300 baud.

yup rare and expensive they are, particualry in the UK - i was lucky to have one - not even a particulary fast one and i sold it for £100 a couple of years back.
stick os8 on as a double boot using syspicker and you can give us a fresh look at a comparison?
I have 7.6 and 8.1 on my 540c and with 12mb ram 8.1 is usable with 8.1 - 7.6 is obviously way better speed wise, but it does cope with 8.1.
a pb1400 should do very well with 8.5 and 64mb ram I...
