    Mac+ OS floppy request

Perhaps, but the biggest differentiator was Twiggy's dual opposed heads, cutting access times by a factor two (while also making the thing damn near unmanufacturable). Looked great on paper.

SE FDHD Internal HDD won't boot

Do you hear the drives spinning up? Many drives of that era and vintage suffered from stiction (Sony 20MB drives were notoriously unreliable, as were certain Quantum 40MB drives). Also, make sure that the drive jumpers are configured properly, and that the termination resistor packs are in place.

    MacPhone Auction

In order to signal the phone company to pay attention to your line, you must produce an off-hook condition by causing some minimum current to flow. Typical values are of the order of 20mA. If you don't do that first, DTMF tones and the like will be ignored.

SE/30 RAM config mystery / cry for help

Two years after the last post...I suspect that the problem has been solved (or abandoned) by now. :)

    Macintosh Classic PSU problems

Check all connectors (unmate them, clean contacts, remate). Carefully inspect the solder joints associated with those connectors. Carefully look at the electrolytics -- in most cases, you will see telltale smudges where these caps have started to leak. You'll need to clean the board thoroughly...

Unusual 512K Analogue Board Upgrade Kit

Thanks for comparing the two so carefully, JDW. It looks as if the difference is in our labeling of CR7 and CR8. Other than that, the schematics seem to agree (at least in that neighborhood of circuitry). I wouldn't be at all surprised if I transposed those labels by mistake.

Color Classic losing focus over time.

A fizzling sound, plus erratic focus usually points to a high-voltage problem. It could be as simple as crud on the crt pins or socket/board, or as serious as a breakdown inside the flyback transformer. As a first diagnostic step, you'll need to open it up and take a careful look around. Report...

    Dining room Classic

Congrats on your acquisition! It looks like it's in pristine condition. There aren't that many remaining compacts that are in dining-room condition. To add to the other suggestions, I'd throw After Dark on that Classic, and let the toasters fly. Its clock options are also nice (I use one of my...

    Macintosh Classic Floppy Probs

Of necessity, floppy drives are matched to the characteristics of the media with which they are designed to work. And 720K floppy disks are the same as 800K Mac disks, so there is no difference in "magnetic exertion" or coercivity (which is a property of the media, not of the heads)...

    12" Apple RGB Focus Issues

There's just one focus control. I don't know where it is on that model, but it shouldn't be too hard to find. Start your search in the general vicinity of the flyback transformer (in large monitors, the focus control is often integral with the flyback), and within the crt socket circuit board...

    SE startup delay?

If the delay annoys you, you may bypass the ram test by holding down the mouse button as the machine powers up and boots.

    good LCDs to hack with

That would indeed work. The price is pretty steep, though.

That's terrific -- you are very lucky!

    good LCDs to hack with

I'm surprised that it is a VGA monitor (and by "VGA" I don't mean simply its resolution, I mean the VGA interface as well). The car-TV monitors I've run into have composite or S-video inputs. Osgeld has mentioned seeing ones with RGB and DVI/HDMI inputs, but these would still require non-trivial...

    good LCDs to hack with

This is a topic that's been discussed in detail in several different places. The upshot is that the only practical way to do this is to find a complete, small LCD monitor with a VGA interface (bonne chance, mon ami). There are no standard interfaces for OEM LCD panels, and manufacturers rarely...

Screen Adjust on a Mac Classic?

Well done, Tempest -- congrats! As to the question about raster size, you have considerable freedom if you don't care about WYSIWYG. The factory endeavors to adjust dimensions so that there are 72 pixels/inch (the same as printed). If such dimensional accuracy is unimportant to you, feel free to...

Help getting System 7 on to Floppy with Windows

I don't know if Gamba's page on the subject was one of the places you've already visited, but in case not, it may be worth a look or three: http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/pc2mac.html I have not checked to see if the links are still working, but you've got a starting point, at least. Good luck!

    Macintosh SE/30 Screen zapping.

It is completely normal for a static charge to build up on a crt's face. If you have your hand on the screen as you power up the mac, you may feel a tingle. However, it is not at all dangerous, and your %#$& will remain put, despite the surprise.

Screen Adjust on a Mac Classic?

Actually, the yoke carries very dangerous voltages (and currents). Specifically, the horizontal deflection winding is the one that can give you a serious bite. I treat the yoke with a lot of respect. :)
