Couldn't repair the optical drive, it never seems to be able to seek the data on the disc. Will need to find a replacement Pismo optical drive as my current solution (an Intel iMac slot loader drive) leaves a nice opening in the side of the case that i'm not particularly fond of.
Also seems to...
Cheers, had a bit of an intermittent boot issue, sometimes it would boot, sometimes it wouldn't and would just beep 4 times (Bad ROM Checksum). Some contact cleaner across the CPU card connector seems to have cleared that right up. Running like a dream now, but still subject to improvements...
And Pismo makes Two.
This is the second conquest in the series, first being the iPod minis I picked up last week. I found this on eBay listed as "For Parts or Not Working" and purchased it with the hope of repairing it.
Apple PowerBook (FireWire)
400MHz PowerPC G3 Processor
320MB RAM (256 +...
Well, an iPod mini or two. Or three. Or four.
An Australian eBay seller and IT Retailer in Sydney recently acquired a surplus of defective iPod minis. I'm not sure how, but given the fact none of them return estimated purchase dates and warranty expiration dates in Apple's Global Service...
Easy enough to mistake the two. Not often you get a port shot indicating which model it is. The identifier is simple, as you stated, but to clarify:
Wallstreet: Rainbow Apple Below LCD. PowerPC above LCD. Macintosh PowerBook G3 printed to the left, below LCD.
Lombard: White Apple Above LCD...
The service center has closed for the Easter long weekend, and that inevitably means we've decided to have another cleanout of the store room, which also inevitably means some machines will get tossed in the bin. The bin of course being the boot of the car. This time around, my focus turns to...
I've finally picked up the machine in question. Damage is fairly extensive, but completely isolated to the display and casing. Internals of the machine have been protected fairly well. I have been considering the low-profile case modification, but it ultimately comes down a couple of things:
-...
Glad the thread and its information could be of assistance. I still have the G3 Minitower, but I sold the G4 ZIF a while back and gave up on importing video from VHS since I could never get the audio/video sync absolutely spot on across the entire length of the recording. Haven't really...
Argh!
Major graphics artifacts and random system lockups. Appearing on an external display as well. Logic board.
Thinking of maybe cooking it with a heat gun to see if it comes good. It's a job for a later date though.
In November 2008, I took delivery of my first relatively new desktop machine, an iMac (Late 2006 CD) that served as my first Intel based Mac. As a matter of fact, it still does. In October 2010 I introduced another machine into the household, an iMac (Early 2006) that had a defective LCD panel...
I'd be in, but i'm in South Australia. I'll be watching this thread with great interest as I may be in for a few machines. I have some in mind (a Mac 128k to a Plus sounds enticing, Colour Classic if there's multiples, and although it's a long shot i'd do scary things for a Power Macintosh G5-...
I'm more than capable of handling capacitor issues should they arise. As it stands, this machine has none. On a sidenote, I never understood the idea that a machine should be trashed, surprisingly the highest volume of such suggestions comes right here on the 68kMLA forums of all places. Entire...
I had a suspicion you were. :p Has to be said, that sounds like an awesome waste of electricity, now if only I had a picture worth displaying. I could probably recover some of the power losses by using the G5 to heat water and drive a steam turbine. Crazy, aint I?
Before you ask, it fell down a flight of stairs. Front bezel is cracked, as you can see. The rear housing also has some non-structural hairline cracks in it. I think the clutch is shot as well, possibly some broken welds as the machine also tilts clockwise and counter-clockwise a few degrees...
Last 68k I worked on, I spent $20 to purchase it and then $100 in parts to actually fix it. Most expensive vintage computer i've ever owned, but the results were fantastic considering.
These days I don't regret it, but I don't really care about it either.
Don't mind what the others are saying. $300 is extremely cheap for an LCD panel and labour no matter how you look at it. Even though iFixit has LCD Panels for $229, you need to factor in that a panel replacement on a MacBook Pro LCD (rather than the entire clamshell assembly) isn't an easy job...
Ended up swapping the CRT/PAV out of a donor iMac. I didn't end up swapping the parts individually, I just removed the parts connected to the donor iMac's internal frame, leaving just the speakers, CRT, PAV and frame still attached, then built it up to completion with all the parts from the...
My iMac G3 overheated pretty badly earlier on in its life. The cooling wasn't obstructed, but the drive in it ran hot and the machine was positioned in direct sunlight for a lot of its life (being a former education system). It also had the usual wear and tear from school kids, coin in the...
