    Defective Tower of Power.

It's already warped, so i'm not really concerned about this machine anymore.

    Defective Tower of Power.

Well, just to add an outcome to this thread, the G5 will most likely be parted out. I need the money from the components and can probably come across another G5 later on if i'm really set on it.

    Defective Tower of Power.

Bah, the logic board's warped. Didn't spot it at first, but it became clear as day while i was attaching the G5 System Controller heatsink. Parts are going away for now. Not sure if i'll end up repairing it.

    Defective Tower of Power.

I've been working on this for hours, logic board in and out of the case, reflowed the slots, surrounding ICs and the G5 System Controller ASIC. I just can not make this computer run. I'm just about to concede defeat to the faulty logic board. Short of a replacement board I don't think it'll run...

    Defective Tower of Power.

That's the G4/700, lovingly restored, not a speck of dust internally when I opened it last. :D Running Mac OS 9.2 and 10.3.5. I managed to acquire a set of Apple Pro Speakers to go with it just a few days ago but forgot to mention them in the thread. It's the same logic board, but without the...

    Defective Tower of Power.

Less than an hour later and I already have my first update. It's a bad solder joint. Applying heat to the memory slots allowed the system to boot up successfully. Looks like i'll be prepping this machine for a reflow job soon. For now i'm celebrating the fact that the machine is easily...

    Defective Tower of Power.

It's become somewhat of a tradition that I name my conquest threads anything but the thing i've actually acquired. This one is no exception. In a nutshell, i've come across a Power Macintosh G5. Single Processor 1.6GHz. 1GB RAM. No Drives. Free, because it doesn't start. When I hit the button...

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

The replacement CPU was lost before it left the supplier. Unfortunately the repair of the PowerBook G3 has been delayed once again. However i've decided to switch sources for the part this time to avoid any repeat occurrences, so hopefully this time around we may actually see some progress. I...

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

It does need a new battery, although it's working sufficiently from AC at the moment. The optical drive is somewhat of a problem, since I swapped in an Intel Mac slot load superdrive it's had no issues reading discs, but has lost most of its factory originality, and the open electronics on the...

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

The replacement 400MHz Processor should be shipping out of New York soon. The PowerBook now fails to power up completely on account of the fact that the system is dependent on having a CPU installed for even the most basic of operations, such as spinning up drives or fans. Once it arrives, it...

PowerMac G5 annoyance - SuperDrive always opens at boot?

Late to the party, but I have found this to happen with many third party keyboards on G4s and G5s (the only ones i've tested so far). At least it's resolved now.

Complete 512K with external floppy and carry case!

Is that case actually yellowed? Early Macs were beige in colour, not platinum (grey), a change that was made half way through the life of the Mac Plus. Looks like a pretty clean example to me.

Triple Post, just checking in to say that the fix didn't hold up. The CPU will require replacement.

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

Problem Found. :( My processor card is bent. I have no idea how it's possible for a card to bend, but it has. Possibly by heat, possibly as a result of the heatsink, it's hard to say. All I know is that the damn card is bent, and it's causing the connection between it and the logic board to...

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

May have to take you up on the battery offer, but it's a case of when, just been through a house move so I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment. Bit if a development, went to test the fan earlier today. Lifted the connector and it just fell apart, wires pulled out of the connector block...

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

I'm not sure to be honest. 233MHz I believe? 14.4" display. Needs a fair bit of work, no battery, no optical drive, crack in the top case around the PC Card slot, trackpad is no longer adhered to the top case... list goes on. However it does power on and it does boot. Had to reseat the...

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

I've finally had a chance to sit down with the PowerBook G3 again. Both Mac OS X Panther and Mac OS 9.2 are running from the primary partition, although i'm considering a repartition of the HDD to allow for fast multi-booting on startup as the Startup Disk control panel is becoming tedious. At...

That and my faceplate's broken. It's possibly reusable but i'd rather not.

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

The Pismo faceplate is primarily what i'm after. If I could i'd cut a slot in the stock plate, apply filler, sand it back and spray it black to have a slot load drive, but it's a lot of work.

    Conquest Two: PowerBook G3 (Pismo)

Pressing down doesn't do it, but a full reseat does. Still not sure as to why that is though. Has to be said, on a sidenote, i'm quite liking this Slot Load drive in the Pismo... may have to mod up a faceplate for it. In the mean time, still need to find a Lombard/Pismo optical drive, CD or...
