    Time Capsule.

So, It's been a little over three months since I breathed new life into the Time Capsule. The reasons for doing so were simple, I didn't want it to become yet another statistic on the Time Capsule Memorial and in the spirit of achieving what some consider the impossible, I had to prove that...

    Air-Cooled 1.8 970FX in White

Air-Cooled, Forced Induction. Twin Centrifugal Blowers. 1.8 Single Performance. Quite a decent amount of boost. The inside of an iMac G5 certainly is reminiscent of what you may see if you were to let Detroit design the inside of a computer. There's no structural glue in this machine, it's all...

Any way to install OS 9 on an Aluminum Powerbook?

Pretty certain it only looks like Mac OS 9. It actually runs on the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) for Intel based models and in Open Firmware for the PowerPCs. There wouldn't be anything in there that would allow a bootable OS 9 install on those later PowerPCs unfortunately.

    White 2008 MacBook!

Apple places a 90 day service warranty on all parts, including ones supplied to AASPs. Why does everyone assume all AASPs are these dodgy, horrible con artists? I'm trying my best here. :p Seriously though, find a reputable AASP and you should be fine. Also, I can confirm that the issue is...

2x iMac Grape off side of road, which one to keep?

The Slot Loaders are also a hack, they're just nowhere near as obvious. However the internal design is an absolute garbage dump of electronics (no idea why I went for that phrase, but go with it) and the critical structural components holding them all together will crack, flake and fall apart...

2x iMac Grape off side of road, which one to keep?

I'd almost be inclined to say the Tray Loader, as the plastic frame inside the Slot Loaders likes to crack and flake with age. If the 333MHz if mint as well, it's an even better deal. It won't be as quick as the Slot Loader DV however. I would think 160MB of memory would cut it for what you want...

    Government auctions are cool!

Unless I'm mistaken or there's some third party hardware in play here, I didn't think the Blue G3 had a floppy. They did however have a ZIP 100 drive option.

    Time Capsule.

So, I had to change power supply. The Jentec PSU I had on hand was faulty, as soon as it heated up it would drop power on the 12v rail and stop the hard drive from functioning correctly, which would in turn throw an amber light. So I changed it for a similar PSU, similar rating but in much...

    If Macs Had Wrecking Yards...

I decided it was worth having a working Mac, no matter how rough around the edges it may be. I needed a new workhorse computer for work anyway, and with this one laying around collecting dust, I figured there was no better time to reassemble it and see how it runs. It doesn't look like the...

    Time Capsule.

Although my previous repair was perfectly fine from a functionality point of view, I was far from satisfied with it. Could I trust it with my data, or better yet, could I trust it to not burn my house down? It was still running much too hot for comfort, and the smell of the hot glue against the...

    Indigo!

Unfortunately I had to give up on two of my Graphite slot loaders for this very reason, it was quite sad, but the stress they caused me with all the creaking and cracking wasn't worth it, and I'm glad I've arranged to get rid of them.

    LaCie Quadra

So, I came across this LaCie D2 Quadra 1TB external hard drive. It's a pretty slick looking little drive, and aesthetically it fits in well with many workspaces. I can see it being something I keep on my desk for regular backups and archiving. It features number of connection interfaces...

    If Macs Had Wrecking Yards...

As it turns out, you can't repair a damaged light diffuser. When liquid enters the display, it doesn't just sit on the plastic sheets, it stains them and etches them with imprints of where the liquid travelled. It can't be cleaned. So, both of my spare LCD panels are useless! I don't think this...

    If Macs Had Wrecking Yards...

Status Report. No cases turned up, so I decided to set out repairing the old one. This is by far one of the more in-depth ground up rebuilds I've ever attempted. The current build sheet run-down: I decided against attempting to replace the entire case for the chip in the corner, it's incredibly...

    Revived MacBook (Mid 2010)

I love progress shots as much as anyone, but I always forget during the process of actually performing a repair. At best the photos I take are happy snaps in relatively dimly lit rooms and are hardly pleasant to look at anyway. (The photos in this post will be no exception.) Time for an update...

    Revived MacBook (Mid 2010)

Another addition to the Macintosh squadron, one that was nearly lost. It's a MacBook (Mid 2010) White Polycarbonate Unibody that almost met its maker earlier this year. Its previous owner had an unfortunate accident with a precariously placed glass of water that proceeded to fall directly into...

    Plus One to the Family

I made it clear that I had no intention to continue collecting Apple hardware. However, I've also gone on the record as stating that I am quite the fan of the Compact series. One in this condition is simply impossible to turn down, and I think it needs no introduction: The plastics are...

    Time Capsule.

A small update, but wow this thing runs hot. By design, the Time Capsule doesn't run its fan unless it detects an emergency over-temp situation, which is some stupidly high figure well beyond the critical failure point. For the moment I've removed the control wire from the fan to allow the fan...

    Time Capsule.

Well, I didn't take any photos of the inside unfortunately, but here's a stock photo that shows it pretty well: The power supply is missing in that photo, but it sits directly over the HDD temp sensor cable (visible over the blue logic board in that image). Anyway, the first step was to...

    Time Capsule.

I had this come into work yesterday with the explicit instruction that we "smash it up" and extract the hard drive from it. I couldn't bring myself to smash it up (but the rubber had to be obliterated to get at the screws without access to a heat gun). The rest of it was kept in very good...
