Twice the Mac for the Price of None.

I want to take the ATX PSU from my old QuickSilver first and see how the machine runs. if it works properly, i'll do the same thing I did with the G4 and just grab a 20 to 24 pin adapter and rewire it. The QuickSilver PSU doesn't even have a 24-28v rail in place, it just uses the standard...

Twice the Mac for the Price of None.

One of the customers at work called yesterday, told us to dispose of his old machine since it was to be too expensive to repair. It officially went off to the dump today. I don't appreciate my co-workers calling me "the dump" but hey, free machine. Power Macintosh G4 Digital Audio Dual 533MHz...

    Rescue A Pod

Just to follow up, the issue does in fact seem to be the battery. To dive in with a little more detail, the iPod starts up with the Apple logo and spins up the hard drive. At the point where the drive begins to unpark the head, the entire unit shuts off and the hard drive re-parks. All because a...

    Rescue A Pod

Working for an Apple dealer has several perks. Occasionally we get some damaged or outdated hardware that customers have given us to dispose of. I haven't come across much in the way of Macs, but there's quite a bit as far as iPods go. There's a damaged iPod Nano 1G there, along with a 5th Gen...

Funny new Bug (or is it a Feature?)

Did it look anything like this by any chance? I can't remember what the official term for this is, but I can easily invoke it on my machines by hitting the Interrupt button (on machines equipped with interrupt buttons anyway).

    iMac G4 Teardown

Changed the hard drive to a Western Digital. The new drive sounds a bit noisy as well. Is there any drive from this area that doesn't sound a bit noisy? It's not constantly noisy like the Seagate, just on accesses, which is a good thing. At least this drive is healthy and a little bit noisy as...

    iMac G4 Teardown

The hard disk almost sounds like it's constantly paging, when I know it isn't. Even in an external case. Almost like the head's clipping something or... well, hell if I know. Regardless, the drive's suspect at the moment. Haven't had a chance to pull the drive out and change it with another one...

    iMac G4 Teardown

It currently has a system lockup issue that i'm trying to diagnose and repair. It doesn't seem to be present as often under Tiger (under Jaguar it's pretty much a given that it'll lock up) but the symptoms seem to coincide with the hard disk spinning down and up. Chances are i've replaced a dud...

    iMac G4

If anyone's interested, i've stripped this machine down and given it a full system clean and tune-up. Usually I do this to all my machines, but normally I don't document the process. You can see the process (with pictures) over in this thread.

    iMac G4 Teardown

This isn't the first time i've torn down a newly acquired machine, but it is the first time i've documented the process. So for the first time i'll be giving a bit of insight as to just what I do in my home operations with every new machine that comes through. For those that aren't yet aware, I...

    iMac G4

So, i'm the focus of the hate of many a Mac collector today. I just picked up my third iMac G4 as a token of appreciation for contributions to a local Apple reseller. Hopefully i'll get a job with them next week. Anyway, the iMac. iMac G4 (First Generation codename "Tessera") 700MHz G4 768MB...

    Rise of the Fallen Soldier...

Apart from that little issue, the machines check out fine. Power supply works and is healthy, humming is audible through earbuds (so the logic board is getting power, for sure). They just don't go any further. It's a shame really, even more-so if I could have connected a DB-15 monitor to the AV...

    Rise of the Fallen Soldier...

I'm still convinced there's supposed to be a ROM SIMM in one of those slots. There are no chips on the board that resemble any ROM or Flash chips even slightly, there are two slots that take either a ROM SIMM or a Cache SIMM, and the machine is acting exactly the way it's expect to without any...

Well, check this out. http://www.kan.org/6100/l2cache.html Perhaps that's why?

No chimes either... but they didn't come with RAM installed either. Matching pairs you say? I don't have matching pairs in there. Could explain a thing or two. :) EDIT: Matching 16mb "Legend" brand 72-pin SIMMs, still no chime. The Centris 660AV boots with them in suggesting that they work...

    Rise of the Fallen Soldier...

Two 6100/66av's, One 660AV. The 660AV is working but i've shelved it for the time being. I just replaced the power supply (dud power switch) with one out of the spare 6100, but haven't really had the time nor motivation to do much else with it. Just as a small update, I recapped the Macintosh...

    Macintosh 128K with "Maccessories Swivel"

The outer case to me looks perhaps a little yellowed but overall not that bad. They were beige from the factory (Pantone 453) so it's probably not that far off. Maybe just needs a clean and it'll come up nicely. Photos can deceive though, so I can't really tell. Either way, looks like a perfect...

It was my fault actually, I had my private messages disabled. Just changed the setting back again. I'll take the discussion back into PM, should work now.

    Rise of the Fallen Soldier...

Cheers for the replies. Certainly the iMac G4s and the iPod were the ones that caught me by surprise the most. I phoned around to some northern suburbs primary schools asking if they had any machines around and finally found one that had 3 in storage. I bought two of them since they wanted the...
