Thanks. Tried that and moved the compact-pro file to the Mac, but no luck. Any chance I can pull the executable from somewhere else like an existing harddisk image, etc.?
Hi all,
I'm trying to get Tardis installed on my SE but no luck. The file does not have the correct resource info - even if I bring the ZIP file over, fix the type to PACT/CPCT and expand I get errors (file corrupt).
Must be something trivial, tips?
I think the pattern comes from the display chip reading from uninitialized video memory. How I remember it is that as soon as your hear the chime it means the CPU is running ROM code.
Glad you got it sorted! Enjoy the “second coming of your SE/30” !
Always great to see that someone wants to revive a classic computer. Kudo's!
Next to the repairs needed I'd vouch for replacing the harddisk with a flash-based solution. The drive (if still working) will die and take your script with it.
For day to day usage I'd recommend getting an external...
I like these by PotatoFi:

A nice zebra pattern on my screen, frozen right away. I've tried applying pressure to them while turning the system on (which is a bit more difficult with 4 compared to just pressing on 1 ROM), but not getting it right.
I suspect its contacts but it might also be an issue with my SE/30 (eg...
Thanks all for the feedback on the OWC SIMMs.
I bought a 4x16 set from Slaton. Nice guy, good support. The SIMMs however do not fit snugly in the sockets, they’re quite thin. Maybe that is the root cause.
Indeed. But there's a review below the modules from somebody that bought them for their SE/30. And @smrieck511 mentions they work in his SE/30 (if installed as 8x16 anyway).
I'm having issues with the 4x16 I got off eBay and am looking to get the OWC memory instead. Are these SIMMs the same thickness like the original ones? All the new stuff are very thin boards and they just rattle inside the memory sockets.
Did anyone have a go at recreating the shields?
There seems to be a good template here : https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/recreation-of-rfi-shields-for-compact-macs-128k-512k-plus-se-and-se-30.3039/
I can get the OrangePi to boot using a stock factory image on flash meaning the hardware is fine, console/serial access works, etc. However, as soon as I use the OrangePi Zero One image from MacIP and try to boot it, it just hangs itself. In hindsight I should have researched more as these...
Correct! I do have the serial console sort of working but this OrangePI Zero 3 is giving me headaches. A Pi is much easier to work with for some reason. But, will get it sorted and post how when I do :-)
Finally managed to get serial working with a TTL adapter. The OrangePI should try to boot the SD drive with the MacIP software but it does not look like it really tries to.
Will try a stock OrangePI Linux image first to get that working…
Good one. It does look like Apple kept the reigns short on what you could do. Other platforms were considerably more open to hacking your way around on the hardware.
Looking forward to doing some tests on DMA related things when I have my classic Mac in working order!
Very interesting!
I think in hindsight the straightforward architecture is one of the reasons Apple was able to keep scaling the hardware of the Macintosh line - at least until the limitations of the OS became blocking to progress. It does make it easier to do big changes such as the switch to...
As I’m relatively new to tinkering with the classic Macs… The classic Mac design in my SE and SE/30 looks pretty basic, with the CPU doing all of the hard work. There are no custom chips like in other systems of this era.
Is there are kind of DMA support in the classic design? Eg. for SCSI or...
You’re fully correct of course. It will be the Mac that creates the DDP packets, the Asante Talk will just bridge them over from serial AppleTalk to Ethernet AppleTalk.
It’s quite nice to have, it beats adding Ethernet cards to everything. Although, there’s some alternatives with BlueSCSI now...
You would need some sort of device to bridge LocalTalk (serial links) to Ethernet. The MacIP device (can be the MacIP software on a PI or VM) or a Cisco router, etc. will share that it is a router on the LocalTalk segment.
Your Mac will encapsulate its IP packets into DDP packets which will be...
