Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
What I'm been trying to do is to implement a localtalk driver (though TashTalk) for Linux, since Linux still contains AppleTalk + LocalTalk stacks in the kernel. This would permit to run netatalk (that does file and printer sharing) directly on the localtalk network, without needing a localtalk...
It basically bridges Localtalk to serial USB using a TashTalk. On linux it works with tashtalkd / multitalk / my kernel driver when it will be finished / any other appletalk stack that can use TashTalk. I did not really try any of this on osx or windows.
For my personal use, I want to have a...
Now I figured it out :D I could not understand why the tx and rx were mixed in the LT adapters, but it makes sense: to use a serial cable obviously! I think I will go with a second SN65HVD1x since it seems the easiest part to find (both seem active @digikey but TI says the 12 is discontinued, sigh)
Ah-ha! I was wondering where the catch was there ;) The tranceiver is the most expensive part on the board, I can see for a combined one if it is cheaper, IIRC Maxim still makes them.
I'm moving the topic of discussing the USB interface to LocalTalk here so we don't OT too much the other thread.
While on the train I drafted a simple adapter. It uses an FT230X instead of the CH340 since the latter seems to have been obsoleted. In my experience with FT230X it is only a 3.3v...
Yes making VDD2 seems quite simple, the datasheet even suggests what transformers to use :) If you guys are interested I can draft a schematic for both adapters (I surely want to make the one with the rs422 minidin port)
TBH I personally would prefer a solution just with the mini din, so then you plug whatever you need, phonenet, localtalk or just a serial cable with one machine :)
Edit: well actually nobody would prevent us to do both, one with mini din and one with the transceiver+Integrated transformer, it...
Would anybody be interested in a localtalk to USB adapter? It would be very easy to make, and probably those cheapo USB to serial adapters would work. Then tashtalk then the transceiver and and connectors.
I only tested it with netatalk 2, really in passing through, so I will need to put more energy into that. I did use your fork netatalk-2.x which compiles very nicely :)
How does macipgw work with localtalk networks? It interfaces with TashTalk in some way? I did not have a chance yet to try it.
That could be interesting. It took me around 20 minutes to implement a basic NBP responder in python and LToUDP, and around 6 hours to figure out why my DDP packets were silently dropped in the kernel in lt0 :)
But also the kernel code contains lots of interesting stuff, like all the routing...
yup that is exactly what it does. I'm just not really sure how it does it, because it shrinks the incoming packet, than it extends it to overlay the last 4 bytes of the extended header to the last 4 of the short header, I'm just not really sure I understand the mechanics of what is happening...
And if you look at the git diff you will see what I very shamefully did wrong ;)
In any case communication works, which is good. I managed to get netatalk to write stuff to lt0 but I could not see anything on the mac (it was an afp share). I will write a small NBP responder just for testing (I...
I worked more on this, and success! (almost). It is starting to work. The journey to get there was... tough to say the least. And it does not help that tools are old or non existent.
I managed to communicate with my mac - turns out I was doing the CRC wrong (d'oh). Once the CRC was ok my mac...
