One of my goals in increasing the RAM in my Centris 650 is to load very large spreadsheets of financial data and have the computer churn through all of my calculations, no matter how painful it may seem.
It looks like I am unable to load anything beyond 1.6MB. I stumbled upon this when I...
I found a neat little benchmark program called TimeDrive.
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/timedrive
Here is what the program said about my ZuluSCSI Mini.
(apologies again for my super blue photos - CRT screens are hard to photograph)
Is that a normal speed? Am I ahead of the curve? Am I...
@ymk - My Jr. High School had Macs, maybe 7 to 10, in several classrooms. They were mostly used for word processing. Several of the kids there ended up with a Mac in the home because of this.
My High School had a couple full-blown Mac labs, much for the same purpose: word processing and some...
When I installed OS 8.1 on my Centris 650, I selected all available options for everything. I figured that I could always reinstall a fresh OS if this was a bad idea.
One consequence of installing everything was the longer boot time. I have disabled some extensions like those for printers and...
My four sticks of memory arrived today. I installed them one by one and watched my total available memory climb by 64MB with each stick added. My machine now has a whopping 256MB of RAM. I could not imagine this number on any machine in 1994. I think my 486 system back in the day used to have...
You may be right in that buying a 486 system from scratch at the time would have come close to the cost of a Mac. Upgrading and transplanting is a different story.
I inherited my father's 286 machine in 1989 and upgraded that box over the next 10 years. When I upgraded to a 386 motherboard, I...
Lots of neat replies! Thanks for the insight, everyone! :)
So, the 68k machines did not have much of a presence in the demoscene in the 80s and 90s.
From a technical standpoint, the machines lacked the specialized hardware like DMA and co-processors, which Amiga had plenty of and Atari had...
Well, yes. Amiga. Not much else to say there. 😁
Amiga and Atari ST machines only had 68000 processors running at around 8 MHz. My Centris 650 rocks a 25 MHz 68040 with a FPU and the machine has higher native resolutions with greater color depth. It ought to rock and roll! I would venture this...
I was enthralled with the demos for the Atari ST and MS-DOS machines coming out in the 80s and 90s. Future Crew's 2nd Reality was the hottest thing I ever saw since trying to stare at the sun one time.
I don't remember seeing or hearing of any demos that flexed the processing power of the 68k...
Supposedly the Easy Install mentions installing NumPy 11.
When I select a Custom Installation then I see NumPy is for PPC machines.
I install all the 68k options and then run compileall.py and it bonks out when it tries to compile Numerical. The libary does not exist in the Lib folder...
I just installed MacPython 1.5.2 from the Macintosh Garden. Wow! I didn't think Python was available for the 68k machines.
I saw that numpy is included with the installer but only for PPC machines. Was there ever a 68k version of numpy?
Thanks!
Thanks for the links!
Yeah, it looks like the "cheap" option is all sold out. There must be a lot of broken spacebars out there!
The first link is pretty pricey at $34.99. 😖 I'll keep looking.
I cleaned my keyboard tonight and broke my spacebar as I was removing it. The front face of it cracked off.
It happened as I was gently grabbing it and lifting upward. I was surprised at easily it broke. Just barely a grab. In retrospect I see I should have been more careful. It yellowed...
Here's a link to the same item in USD.

So, if I install these modules one by one in my Centris 650, then I should see my available memory grow by 64MB each time.
Free returns too. I can disco with that.
I did a search for "256mb 650" and not a whole lot popped up. Your post from 2012 is here.
