Well. I hadn’t even thought of trying about three quarters of those, so thank you for that nudge out of my mental box, so to speak. :¬) The actual state of affairs is even stranger than I thought… it turns out that the first Atlona adapter does in fact work correctly, so honesty has compelled...
I did indeed acquire an Atlona AT-DP400 for a good price. Alas, I got a black screen when I tried it, with each of two monitors. The seller was very good about it and refunded my money before I even asked, but I've had to order a second one. This one's supposedly new in box, so I shall see...
I found an AT-DP400 for that price! I also found one that from the photos was actually a mislabelled AT-DP200 (the difference being that those are single-link only), so buyer beware.
Probably true, but as I understand it they are not LED backlit and thus produce too much heat for my use case...
Good gravy, they want $300 for that thing! There HAS to be something out there that costs less than the whole blasted computer did. Oh well, you've still given me more keywords to search on. I do note that the adapter I bought claimed to do what it claimed to do using HDMI 1.3 rather than...
It was this one on Amazon, which I agree does not look like anything very capable but was explicitly advertised as being dual-link up to 2560x1440: https://a.co/d/7wCyHFZ
The graphics card is a GeForce 6600 16-lane PCIe card. It has one DVI port that can do up to 2560x1440 and a second that...
When you replaced the fan, did that include the wiring? I don't have my G5 here and can't look to compare. If the wiring was also replaced that's probably not the problem, but how sure are you that the connectors are good? Did you try using contact cleaner on them?
If they are controlled by...
It could be a thermostat issue? As I understand it (not very comprehensively), the fans are under microcontroller control, so if it thinks the temperature in that zone is OK it won't try to turn them on. Not sure that holds up, though - it tries to turn them on when the rest of the machine...
Some time ago, I made a foolish impulse purchase of a second Power Mac G5 – my original machine was a dual 2.0 GHz model, the new one is a dual-core 2.3 GHz model. It arrived with a big cut through the power cable, so I couldn't even try to boot it until I sourced a modern replacement.
Once...
I have two Power Mac G5s, one of which is a Late 2005 dual-core model and as such has a video card that will do 2560x1440. I also recently acquired a new monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1440. Unfortunately, the new monitor has HDMI (well, and DisplayPort) inputs, as new monitors often...
@nathall – thanks, I will be asking around the group too; but it's a little more advanced than what we usually deal with, so casting the net wider seemed prudent.
@cheesestraws – I totally hear you on the fuse thing, I learned just last month that a fuse can blow but still conduct current if...
I have a Power Mac G5 dual-core 2.3 GHz. Alas, when I first turned it on, it went CLICK and the power supply is now utterly stone dead. (Not even the little wire that's used for soft power switching has any voltage on it.) I can't find anything apparently wrong with it, and deep repairs on a...
This isn't _completely_ accurate, in that Power Mac G5s (as of the final iteration) could physically support up to 16 GiB when 64-bit addressing is active (i.e., for command-line software under Tiger, or in general under Leopard). I don't know whether there were any software limitations...
That's very helpful, thank you! I did indeed see that marking but had no idea how to trigger it. I shall investigate further. Hopefully without excess lightning bolts.
I'm actually not 100% certain that the problem is even IN the power supply. All I know is that the machine made a "snap" noise and went stone dead when I tried to power it on. (I'm going to feel very silly indeed if it turns out the two hours and change I spent extracting the PSU - a process...
Does anyone have any idea what to look for inside a 710-watt PS from a "Late 2005" dual-core 2.3 GHz? Nothing in here looks scorched, discoloured, bulgy, or leaking. I can't find anything that looks like @Builder68's daughterboard with caps on it - there's a daughterboard of some sort in the...
I distinctly recall a discussion to the effect that some Apple software failed to set -- um. Either the EtherType or the SNAP packet type, can't remember. It cleared it instead of using the AppleTalk identifier, so wifi routers tended to drop them as invalid, or something to that effect. The...
