The W8 start of an iMac serial number was common across many models.

You are 100% correct. Apple only had one Power Supply Module part number 661-0370 that covered ALL power supplies used in both the Mac SE and SE/30. It's the OEM way.
The MDD will work with 1 DIMM installed. I would also start it up without any DIMMs installed - you should get a beep and the front LED to flash. If it does not change (meaning zombie), then you either have a bad CPU , mobo, or bad combination of parts.

Every PC-133 512MB 168-pin DIMM I have in my known-good Mac stash are double-sided. Just upgraded an iMac G3 slotload with two of these 512MB's and it works just fine, so it should work fine with your iMac too. However, I know Apples can be picky or quirky at times. I ALWAYS reseat memory...
Disconnect the IDE ribbon cable to the HD and see if the cd boots. If so, check your HD jumper settings as it should be Master not Slave or CS. If memory serves me correct, CS (cable select) wasn’t used until the G4’s.

I just used it again, for the first time in decades, on a Mac SE/30 and YES it does work like butter once an adjustment was made! Also used it to remove the ROM SIMM too.

Yes, we actually used the SIMM Tool since breaking the customer's clip(s) was a big no-no.
These retaining clips were fragile even when NEW!!!
