Thanks for the informative post! I remember hearing about SLIP in the 90s but never used it or learned about it before. Cool to know that there is this way to network our old Macs
No it is not a Mac, but it is relevant to me because it is a bit retro and fits in with my mostly Mac studio. It is a beautiful, black Z-80 based MSX computer with built-in MIDI and 4-operator FM synthesizer. They were so far as I know the only MSX format computers offered in the US. The big...
There have been times when I needed to ignore the self-mounting and treat smi as a regular archive. Assuming it is not corrupt, just try opening with Stuffit Expander. Failing that, try renaming it to a .sit file extension. If that doesn't work, use resedit to change the type/creator codes to...
Whoo! Only thing I have to add for now is that this is inspirational. I am going to bed now but definitely archiving and reading this for my SE adventures.
D00d... sounds like you hit the ultra-LocalTalk score! Very cool. I wish I had stores around here with such old tech to rummage through.
Most of the FastPath boxes look pretty much the same, metal box with purplish-red front. And a few different options for ethernet connections on back. There...
Thanks to Scott's recent garage sale, I finally have an LC. It's cool how much Mac they squeezed on to those little chips. I already have a few extras in mind here: full 040 is on the way, and I have an LC ][e PDS card here.
Thing is that I am worried about overloading the PSU. With the above...
Yes, there are still people using the protocol. I was away from it for a few years and just this past spring/summer I got back on the bus looking for SE-era software. I found Higher Intellect - which has been around forever - and a few ok ones. Next thing I looked for was Tracker-Tracker and was...
Boo-tee-full....
Always wanted to check out a Radius 81 in person. The separate VideoVision package is fairly easy to find. It must be nice to put the whole system together.
Wow, very nice find indeed! Micro Computer Days? It is gorgeous.
+1 for mechanical switches, I loathe needing to use a dome keyboard for any length of time.
Last year I needed to buy a clicky keyboard but I don't typically find them locally, and they are starting to get pricey in auction-land...
Mmm... VAXstation! I used them as a kid, and the workstation geek in me still drools over those. I loved loading some CAD system (MicroStation maybe?) and making structures, rotating them around, zooming through them - all without knowing much about what I was doing. My dad working at DEC...
I suspected that the pads might have lifted off. That's what the moisture does, lifts the copper laminate off of the fiberglass. Cool thing is that the circuit can still work just fine even if it is lifted up a bit, but since SMT caps are top-heavy they can eventually fall off.
I second what...

Sounds like you found the cause of the problem. Same thing happened with an 8100 I found - it worked fine when I found it. It started to flake and when I took it apart for troubleshooting, parts, caps mostly, started falling off of the video card. I suspect that some of these things can...
What is the "chime of death"? Is it the broken-glass sound?
Same thing happens with me. I can use a bit of gear every day and it is fine. But after it is not used for a few days, weeks, months it has a problem. It seems counter-intuitive because I always imagine that use would take a harder...

They say there are a million stories in The Naked Mac...
Indeed, since I got an extra SE logic board with my accelerator, I have pondered re-casing it for just an external video connection. Maybe a smaller linear supply (which I have a few of) and video out in a little box, not unlike an...

Yes, most fans do use speed control these days, and PWM is the obvious choice. That's some upshot of my electronic music experience, setting up a 555 timing chip as an oscillator with pulse-width control is something I have done before. A trimpot for speed control is probably sufficient.
Even if it is just a cooling fan. ;)
My 030 SE runs just way, way too loud. The 1GB hard drive (salvaged from a "parts" 7500) sounds like a VTOL aircraft! The only noisier box I have is a PIII Compaq server with RAID chassis. Problem is that I made the SE to use for music, so the noise is...
I tried each method, on different occasions. Same results.
It could be some kind of corrupt PMU ROM on the board, but I doubt it, it probably just wouldn't start at all.
Even though I just posted in another thread about MDD G4s that I have had no problems with the power supply, this seems most...
Well, this advice worked and remedied the problem - for a while. Two weeks of disuse and the problem is back again. Nice to know a temporary fix, but I wish I knew what was causing the problem. I had the same problem with the previous logic board, maybe it is the PSU? When it finally goes into...
It is true that so long as there are drivers, one is assured of some serial functionality... But Macs have always been funny when it comes to routing services with serial communications. For instance, why are most 3rd party adaptors incompatible with LocalTalk? It is still RS422, right? And then...
