What to do With an ANS 500

I am experiencing quite a bit of vicarious thrill from this topic, since I may well never find a shiner myself. You guys rock!

    Building an Apple Talk Network

I encountered some weirdness with this last week. There was a file I copied onto my SE but I deleted my other copy of it, so I wanted to copy it back. (It was a corrupt archive of the program Oscar, I wanted to see if the other archive would open) I figured since my SE has AppleShare Workstation...

    Opcode, MacsBug, and MIDI gear

It has been a great week for cheap interesting finds! Opcode: new boxed Vision 2.5 for Windoze - not as good as Mac version, but still quite good at that. Weird to see OMS running in Win98se new boxed Max 3.5.9 - more Max! This is my third license for Max, if we don't count the fourth NFD...

Fab, wizard, and - dare I say it - gear! Very nice haul indeed

    Farallon Phonenet PC card

Definitely an ISA card, so I don't know if you will have much luck with running it in XP, but it might be possible. I wonder if we can adapt any regular RS422 card for LocalTalk with the proper software. The main trick seems to be getting a given software to look for the chosen hardware. There...

Dilema: Mounting a 9GB SCSI Drive under System 7.6

Did you try formatting them in HFS standard? So far as I know this should work. Also you might be able to boot the machine with a Gparted distro to run diagnostics on the drive and format it. Gparted is a great tool for stubborn drives.

    Make an iMate?

It's probably just a microcontroller, programmed to convert ADB protocol into a format that can be recognized on a USB bus. There are some other projects on the web I have seen which adapt various nonstandard keyboard types, the hardware is going to be quite similar. To program it you would...

Mac OS 10.7 Lion and Classic Macs

RE: FTP - Uncommon? Seems to me that it is one of the more common networking tools out there, and not going away anytime soon. My company uses it every day to move order, customer, and other data around its corporate network. I frequently use it in my personal internet travels. Since it is just...

Looking for OLD midi sequencing apps

They do turn up to buy on ebay from time to time, it just takes some patience. Cubase and Logic are fairly popular and frequently turn up on servers which offer abandonware and unsupported versions. May I ask what hardware and OS you plan to use? This has a lot to do with how old you can do...

    2.5" SCSI SSD Project

You think that's bad... I am probably a high-functioning autistic, or nearly so. People don't find me much easier to read in person! And then if I try to compensate by offering a detailed explanation of my state of mind for them to work with, they look even more perplexed and worried! Many have...

    2.5" SCSI SSD Project

I am very enthused, and appreciative. It is one of the more awesome undertakings I have heard of in a long time! You lost me there, I don't believe in SMD for connectors. Guess that's the extra wear and expense of my road warrior lifestyle. The project does still interest me just the same, I...

    2.5" SCSI SSD Project

They are really not a specialized part! If you really need to know the exact dimensions, just find somebody who makes 2MM right-angle, 50-pin headers, and get their data sheet which has the exact measurements. Then you either find a part in your CAD library, or make a template yourself, which...

Finally A Way To Read 400K/800K Disks Without An Old Mac

I finally just got all the pieces together and set up my Kryoflux board and software. It seems to be ready for action, but the box of drives I catalogued has not turned out so well... Many of these were field stripped from some of the many PCs which sprouted on the curb every week while I was...

    2.5" SCSI SSD Project

Weird, I typed a reply earlier, but it vanished. They are just standard 2mm pin headers, aka .079", 50-pin, I am guessing you'd want a right-angle variety. Not to dissuade you from pursuing AMP, but here is a page of similar things. http://www.mouser.com/catalog/630/1124.pdf

    First 475 adventures!

I had been having some trouble getting the board to start lately, it would chime, spin the drive, and then - nothing. This I guessed to be caused by PRAM weirdness and if I leave it plugged in for a few minutes and quickly toggle the power, it boots fine. The full 040 install was quite easy. It...

    Interesting G3 vs. G4 benchmark

All depends whether or not you need those features, otherwise it is not much different from a G3. Look at the apps you use often and see if they will use Altivec or multiple processors. I use Adobe apps, and Logic Audio, and those benefit from both - even in OS 9. This is why I opted for a...

    Farallon PhoneNet StarController/24 Series 300

Another great AppleTalk score! I have wondered about these controllers. I am trying to avoid the whole PhoneNet cabling thing, I prefer shielded twisted-pair for this stuff. The StarController would probably work just as well with different connectors than RJ11, if adapted. Wish I could check...

Things Mac OS 9 doesn't do that you wish it did.

YES! I just finally tried Coela. My preferred setup of two Miller column browsers is finally a reality. Reminds me of older versions of Path Finder. Wish i had known about this years ago!

    B&W '030 games

The gameplay in Spectre VR does not seem very different compared to earlier versions which run on my SE. My guess is that the only reason it would require a II is the (hilarious) multimedia cutscenes.
