Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
That is so nice looking, and you took such great care in disassembling it! I have an orange DV (also in the box) and I dread the day I have to recap it. I did not enjoy changing out the battery earlier this year and there are SO many caps in your picture! Where did you get the list for...
Thanks for the report out. I am going to be looking after mine eventually and just wanted to know what I would be in for, so thank you very much.
Can you imagine the alternate universe where young Steve did not have one of these in his bedroom, keeping him up all night and did not grow up...
Was it easy to take apart - (I guess not, any hints)? Did you use someone's list for the caps or did you order them once you had it opened and checked them out?
If you put together your own list, could you share it, along with the model number of the PSU?
...and since I have not used those ports on that machine, I would not have seen an issue. Thanks for the response cgp. I have reversed the cap for now and if I remember when I get the other caps in, I will replace it with one of the ceramics.
This is SO timely, so thank you! I just pulled an old LCIII board out of storage that I had re-capped (badly) several years back, when I was less experienced than I am now. At that time, I was doing two LCIII's at once and only had one working power supply between them, so the fact that one...
...or two. I've found that multiple ones can be more beneficial than one longer one and help you control the effects better. One that I bought looked similar and made a great donor board!
I do something similar when testing old SCSI drives, but I have the luxury of using a 6100 instead and it has a CD that I use to boot from, while plugging in each drive. If you cannot rig up something similar, then you need additional information on how to set each drive's SCSI ID.
There are...

Yes it does.
For the specs on drives (as well as other items), a nice easy check is here at stason.org (here is the page for this drive) https://stason.org/TULARC/pc/hard-drives-hdd/ibm/DSAS-3360-DESKSTAR-365MB-3-5-SL-SCSI2-FAST.html
Sort of.
Unlike some on here who have posted excellent lists of the required caps, dimensions, locations for a project, I don't have all of that put together for this power supply.
What I do have is a couple of digital pictures that I took (not that great and missing lots of additional details -...
A big shout out to Moloko for starting this thread. I'm giddy that I was able to get a peek into a corner of MrFahrenheit's 'bat cave' and get a look at some of the drives in action, as well as the stacks of media, which were on hand.
I also have an A&W glass on my desk, but instead of...
I posted this in the lounge back in May (What did you do to your Mac today?)... the piece is still fine and although I haven't been removing that piece, I have taken the case off and put it back on several times since then and it is still holding without change. I think this fix depends on how...
Here are a couple items to check, from when I looked over the picture. Not sure if they are anything or not, just ideas for things to check.
- There seems to be a scratch across the vias where the negative battery terminal attaches (near B2). You might check where the traces lead for...
I've used one of those to 'keep up' the rebuilt 6 volt batteries for my Portables when the computers are in storage - they seem to do fine, otherwise, they would be dead in under a year. Mine has two settings, a 'quick charge' (which I do not suggest) and a very slow charge that I use for this...
Timely comment - I am putting together a shopping list for some PSU items and also for this board. It won't stop me proofing the final list before I hit send, but it makes me breathe a bit easier already, knowing that someone has gotten theirs up and running.
I'm sorry, but I have never seen this occur. Bad plastics e.g. 'Spindler' items will not necessarily be improved, but I have seen other items that were severely yellowed, and following a correct, retrobriting were in better shape afterwards. Yes, they had improved flexibility as well as...
