Are you referring to the mirror cable for the 5200? (I have that one, mostly interested if there are other video cards that would work for it and if they might be faster than the valkyrie chip)
I read in one technote that it is possible to put a graphics card in the PDS slot on the performa 5200... what cards are out there that should work for it?
OK I had to check the motherboard, and OK I can debunk my previous suspicion...
The A0-A8 seems to be connected between the two chips.
So valkyrie does 32bit read/writes by writing to same address to both chips and placing 2 bytes in one and 2 bytes in the other.
We know valkyrie has 8 buffered...
I'm adding a small piece of information here: the vram is 2x 512kb, and from the photo I took, it is NEC 424260, here is the datasheet for it:
https://docs.rs-online.com/31a1/0900766b80030b7a.pdf
I suspect that valkyrie chip hardwires one chip (512kb) for the the video buffers (320x240x2 bytes...
I would just delete boost and rebuild. Who knows how you got the x86-64 to begin with, by the time you would need it (if ever) things might have changed how they deal with this anyway.
Hey @Snial, I've been missing this thread, feel free to ping my name so I get notified. This is what I get:
I really did not have any problems compiling retro68k myself.
I didn't read the whole thread in detail. I would recommend to wipe brew completely, delete your Retro68-build and redo it.
That is a helpful contribution :ROFLMAO: but in what way was it the worst? Slow? or broke down? I've read many that had various hardware issues with it, but mine had none of those issues, it was working very well, and I really enjoyed coding on it while having the built-in TV with a small...
@Melkhior I have to take the opportunity and paste photos of the logic board, in case you would be interested in settling some questions we've been having reading the developer notes 😅
All notes says it is a 64 bit databus between L2 and CPU, so we think that is the case. We are not sure why...
If you do get an HPV card for your 6100, I would be very curious to see how that changes things though!
I see now there is an entry for the 7100 which is just like yours except it is 80mhz, and it got 13.5 fps which is more than expected (combination of both cpu and bus improved?), so Civic is...
Hey folks, I'm enjoying the discussion! Will add in some info here:
The 6100 uses the Civic video card, which seems quite a bit faster than Valkyrie I, on Speedometer graphics 8bpp, the 6100 civic gets 1.7 while Performa 5300 with Valkyrie I gets 1.08 (and the 5200 gets 0.95)...
@Snial I realized this one has actually a table listing the distribution of instructions in the spec92 benchmark! And for fdivs, not a single one is used for the specint92, so the fact that fdivs stalls the integer unit for 18 cycles was never something that would have showed up by their...
I've been confused a lot, it is hard to find primary sources and even then, they sometimes contradict each other. Also when I've been writing micro bench code to test things, I've also confused myself to the wrong conclusion at times just because it is sometimes hard to pinpoint exactly why...
Oh that would be very interesting to see! The 6300/120 has the Valkyrie chip like the 5200/6200/5300, and it would be very interesting to see how much more FPS you would get with 120 mhz. The 5300 result (12.1 fps) showed that the 5200 (and likely 6200) is actually cpu bound (7.9 fps), which...
It has actually been quite a bit of research just to compare the 603 versus CPU:s from its timeline: 1994-1995 (and possibly 1993-1996)
Starting from 6502 to Core 2 Duo would either not go very deep, or be quite an undertaking. Probably best to start another thread for some other "era" of...
It was a huge improvement over the 601 in terms of cost and energy efficiency. But in raw power per mhz it seems to do a bit worse than the 601. Example: 603 is 1.6M transistors, the 601 is 2.6M, Pentium is 3.3M, and the cost to produce scales roughly with that. The 603 can run in the 5200...
Many chips 1994/1995 had 8kb split. I don't think that was the issue. Both first two versions of the Pentium chip had split 8kb/8kb. If I had the choice for my programs, I would prefer 8kb split over 16kb unified.
Unfortunately some article on low-end mac has convinced many that the 603 itself...
It is exactly the same chip!
Although in comparison to the 68040, the 68040 would also stall?
The 68k code *could* have been an explanation, I checked by entering MacsBug while it was running on Mac OS 7.5.1, and NQDMapRegion was active each time I entered and was in PPC code. So the...
True, although this is only when there are cache misses both in L1 *and* L2. So it will not be constantly bottlenecked by the memory bus, only occasionally (although when it does happen, it will be expensive!).
The problem comes with cache inhibited data (like storing pixels to vram, or IO...
OK this was interesting... Quadra 630 beats my 5200 on speedometer 8 bit graphics! I ran the test several times, the 8-bit graphics is actually quite a bit faster in Mac OS 7.5.1. versus Mac OS 8.5.1 (but 16-bit is the same).
