    macintosh classic questions..

Yes that's the one I have. I just use the solid extender shank, which adds about 4 or 5 inches to it. A basic T15 screwdriver would cost less (I see one with a 4" shaft for $10 on Amazon) but I've more than gotten my money out of this kit. I actually have two, one from Can. Tire and one generic...

    No High Voltage on CRT

Did you clean the logic board after the recap? Have you recapped the analog board too? If not, that will need to be done. Also check for cracked solder joints at the back of the AB, particularly at plug connectors. That a ill definitely cause video glitches like you describe.

    SE/30 Glitches and PDS issues

What does the zebra pattern look like? I typically start with RAM, swap and test groups of four in each of the two banks, sometimes you can get simasimac from a failing stick. Next look at video address muxes (UA8 -UG8) and related address lines. Bad chip, bad solder, leg corrosion, broken or...

    macintosh classic questions..

@chelseayr I have a screwdriver kit with an extender that works like a charm for the T15 screws in the handle. “Mastercraft 66-piece precision screwdriver kit” from Canadian Tire, lots of bits, has been very useful. FYI I find Classic and Classic II cases are both very hard to pull apart even...

Colour Classic Y1 Crystal replacement? - Battery leak almost madness

You're welcome! Sounds like you know what you're doing, but I'll drop my two cents anyway: long road ahead for this board. Probably going to need to replace J4 and J5 and possibly their controllers. U11 looks highly questionable too. F2 probably works but I'd swap it just because aesthetics...

Colour Classic Y1 Crystal replacement? - Battery leak almost madness

Welcome! Y1 is a 32.768 kHz radial can crystal, plentiful and extremely cheap on places like Mouser or Digikey. :)

Bizarre CRT bloom / wobble / shadowing on... all of my compacts?

Update: I tested a (new to me) clean, low-use Classic II. I didn't recap the analog board, just swapped in a recapped LB. It is much more stable than my other compacts. However, if I crank up the cutoff, it exhibits the same horizontal instability, just to a lesser degree. (Rock steady voltages...

Mac SE - Accelerating an accelerator

Not a lot of clearance for these accelerator boards is there? I had to slightly bend the chassis just to remove mine without damaging the onboard RAM. Now I'm thinking I'll have to get it to 40 or 50 MHz too. :)

Bizarre CRT bloom / wobble / shadowing on... all of my compacts?

Bloom isn’t very noticeable at average brightness with retrace lines invisible. But every time I open a window or menu the horizontal geometry wiggles and jumps, and at above average brightness the shadowing presents itself. I’ve read up more on bloom, could just be a worn out tube or flyback...

Bizarre CRT bloom / wobble / shadowing on... all of my compacts?

Yes that's me opening the menu to demonstrate the issue. When a menu or window is opened, it bulges horizontally. When I adjust the brightness dial or the AB cutoff, the whole screen blooms. Seems to depend on brightness. If I dim the screen enough the problem becomes imperceptible. (I'll add a...

Bizarre CRT bloom / wobble / shadowing on... all of my compacts?

I tested at another location. The issue persists. Must be a component I missed, or a flaw in my rework process, or equipment. But what could cause this identical symptom across a Plus, SE, SE/30, another SE/30, and Classic II? I haven't done any work on the SE, either. (It's gonna end up being...

Color SE/30 that Mac84 is working on

Not big on Youtube personalities either, but tbf sometimes I'll think up a cool and unique project idea, then discover that someone else did it 3 or 4 years ago.

Bizarre CRT bloom / wobble / shadowing on... all of my compacts?

I tested and a few of our outlets do actually have reversed polarity. I'm glad to know about that before someone gets a nasty shock, so thank you for the suggestion. However, the issue manifests even on correctly polarized plugs. I also tried running a ground wire directly from the Mac to the...

Bizarre CRT bloom / wobble / shadowing on... all of my compacts?

Definitely the bloom and screen bulging, but not positive the shadowing occurs on all four. That could be an issue specific to the SE/30.

Bizarre CRT bloom / wobble / shadowing on... all of my compacts?

Good idea! I know the renovation by previous owner was not professionally done, I will check polarity. Bold of you to assume that I (a guy who spends all his free time fixing vintage Macs) have any friends! Haha no that's a very reasonable suggestion, I'll try that. I tested while opening...

    Recapping a mac classic

Tantalums can be tough because they are usually a little wider than electrolytic caps. My technique is to clear both pads completely of solder, then add fresh solder to just one pad. Attach the cap to that side, and use tweezers to adjust it until it's positioned where you like it. (Try not to...

Bizarre CRT bloom / wobble / shadowing on... all of my compacts?

I've been tearing my hair out troubleshooting an otherwise healthy SE/30. Adjusting brightness, either from the adjustment wheel or directly on the analog board, results in noticeable bloom (screen increases in size). When I click a menu or open a window, display shows slight horizontal shadow...

    SE/30 What to check next?

Hmm that’s a strange display pattern. Tested the RAM? Can cause video gremlins. Worth testing both banks individually too. Checked plugs on the analog board for cracked solder joints? Usually causes black screen or wobble symptoms but worth a look.
