Picked up a few macs, don't know where to start

Running without a battery is annoying because every time you boot the machine, the default mouse speed is super slow.

Lotta upgrades back then were real hacks by today's standards!

iMac G3 Rev A-D FSB bus overclock

This is just a SWAG, but if one RAM slot stops working at higher clock speed, the reason for the failure may be that there are signal integrity issues at the higher speed.

They show up as $12.94 for me at the moment, which is about what I paid last year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The one keyboard to rule them all

Are those the ones from AliExpress? If so, I have a set of them on my Design68 keyboard and they are surprisingly nice indeed.

Picked up a few macs, don't know where to start

Yeah, it's subtle, but once you learn to recognize it, it's easy to spot. As Kenny said, the dull solder joints are a telltale sign, and you might see legs on surrounding components turning green as well. The leaked electrolyte on the boards tends to attract more dirt/dust to those areas as well.

Picked up a few macs, don't know where to start

The ones in these machines don't tend to fail that way, they leak electrolyte out the rubber seals on the bottom and it seeps all over the board.

7410 on G3 ZIF Interposer Development Thread

This could also be nice for upgrading G3 upgrade cards for older Power Macs to become G4 upgrade cards. Then again, if you're going the interposer route, why not aim higher than a 7410?

From happy Mac to flashing question mark during boot?

Following this post, I decided to start a separate thread about this specific phenomenon to try to understand what's going on. Here's what's happening: The machine boots to a flashing question mark, then quickly switches to a happy Mac, then back to a flashing question mark, where it sits...

    Mathey MSATA-13UMAC IDE/SATA card

Okay, the first time I didn't give it a fair shot; the partition size on the SATA drive was too large. I made a smaller partition and copied my 8.6 system folder to it and verified that the 5400 will boot from that with a SIL3112 card. Then switched to the VT6421A card and it boots to a brief...

    Mathey MSATA-13UMAC IDE/SATA card

The card works fine in the 5400 running 8.6, and it sleeps/wakes reliably, but the machine doesn't seem to want to boot from a drive connected to the card, which is a bummer.

Yeah, fink is right, that row of chips is the root cause of most video problems. I have also found that no vsync can be a PAL problem.

    Mathey MSATA-13UMAC IDE/SATA card

Great! Glad to hear you're going to try it for yourself. I would love to see some benchmarks. I did a back-to-back QuickBench with a SIL3112 and the VT6421A just as a quick sanity check. Performance looked about the same, but I was only using a 500GB Hitachi HDD. I don't have any spare SATA...

    Mathey MSATA-13UMAC IDE/SATA card

It provides the 2.5V core voltage for the controller chip. The cheaper cards just use a big diode in series with the 3.3V regulator. 3.3V - 0.7V = 2.6V; close enough, eh! Some card designs use a 2.5V fixed LDO instead of the adjustable regulator.

    R7000 beige G3 issues

@croissantking, that's a seriously hotrodded Beige. Thanks for the info. Are your PCI cards running at 35MHz then? I've never heard of a Switch Power VRM. I just know Royal is the one to avoid. I'm planning on building my own DIY G4 ZIF eventually and it's nice to know that a 7400 clocked that...
