Is there a way to preserve the network selection (Ethernet) without a PRAM battery?

There is a Control Panel that might work: Pram Auto-Restore. I would have thought that network settings should be covered, but have never tried it myself. This Gamba archive has a list of associated tidbits: https://vintageapple.org/gamba2/tidbits.html , but the d/l seems to be broken. Scroll...

SE/30 AppleCD SC Plus and External Speakers

I really like this approach to collecting: one machine (or very few) maxed out and in use with period peripherals is an elegant alternative to 50 or 60 machines crammed on shelving and probably spilling over onto the floor. The latter approach has caused me a fair bit of trouble over the years...

Can anyone identify this (apple?) nubus+pds videocard?

A close-up pic of the black connector would be useful. Is it an 040 PDS? I have a vague recollection that there was a card (PPC accelerator, maybe?) for the IIfx that used both the PDS and a Nubus slot, but I don’t recall that combo being available for any other model. Mind you, I just went...

M1030 Portrait Display Not Communicating With IIfx

Certainly some late 80s/ early 90s cards need the monitor settings stored in pram, to which end you are meant to hold down a key on booting to force the machine to cycle through the options until everything is right. I can’t remember whether the 8.24GC requires that or not, but it is worth...

    G5 aircooled 2.7

I have a spur with an air vent (a hose end with a plug shoved in — I used a piece of fibreglass rod) installed on one of the lines of my Quad (single pump) at the highest point to allow air to escape on a flush/refill. The spur is otherwise plugged, obviously, for normal operation. The idea was...

    500-series logic board swap?

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

Well if 7.5.3 runs about as fast as 7.1 on the Classic II, I may just have to give it a go. The key attraction for me would be the better AppleScript. Maybe the best thing would be to do a fresh installation and try to use it with System Picker, so that I could revert to 7.1. The minor...

You have the required terminator on the end of the internal scsi ribbon cable, right?

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

Yes, I like a Classic II as well. For certain uses, like pure word processing, it is a fine machine, which carries out its duties with a minimum of fuss. But System 7.5.3? Why, oh why on a Classic II? Mind you, I have a vague recollection that the blessed eQuill, formerly of this parish, used...

    G5 Space Heater

Surely that .455kw would mainly be spent on spinning disks and fans, comparing numbers at a furious rate, and generally running the thing — generating heat as wastage in the process. How many watts would be wasted as heat is a guess, but the machine isn’t a simple resistor.

    G5 Space Heater

A Quad at full load apparently consumes 0.455kw/hr. If we assume for argument’s sake that 100w of that is dissipated as heat (which I expect is an over-estimate, but whatever), you’d be talking about it providing 2.4kwh a day of heating. So maybe you could actually take the edge off the cold...

    Kensington TurboMouse 4.0 - Trackball

There’s an optical sensor in both my (earlier, I think) Turbomousen which has to be clean; there’s also a capacitor, so you know what that means by this stage. Both mine had problems moving the cursor in one direction. One got fixed, and the other needs to go back to rehab, I’m afraid.

    G5 aircooled 2.7

Switching processors would require thermal recalibration, but it ought to boot with fans blasting after the switch if the processors are both working. Sounds like a serious hardware fault.

    G5 aircooled 2.7

A bad job of applying heat sink paste could give that result. The G5s are hard to get right — I have done the job often, and have needed to repeat the process two or three times over the years because of high temps after the first go. So it might be worth pulling it apart one more time….

So what's new with your Newton?

The eMate battery is easily replaced by buying one of these (or higher mah capacity), snipping the leads off a couple of inches long, and soldering on the wiring from the original battery...

Reasons why the Apple 8.24 GC NUBUS video card is so desirable

It does not require a IIfx, no. I think much of the association with the IIfx is that the 24GC so nicely complements the co-processors/ controllers unique to that machine, in the 24GC’s having not only a Quickdraw processor but an actual operating system that boots up, running the Nubus card. A...

    IIci Cache Card Failures

As I recall, the fellow who developed TenFourFox had IIci cache cards fail regularly in a machine used as a server of some sort running 24/7. I think they may well be prone to failure, but if it turned out just to be two caps, well, that would be a good thing.

Are any of these NUBUS graphics cards any good?

I think the Thunderstorm is just a DSP card, so no video out, but an interesting card for image work in a IIfx. Can’t comment on the others, except that none are especially high end.
