Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
I've been seeing a lot of that, poking around to see if I can get a decent DOS+WFW system, it seems like the thought process is that XP runs on a pretty wide range of hardware and runs most 9x games basically fine, so, just slam XP on an i5-2400 and call it a vintage gaming PC.
Which, like, fair...
realizing this is several days old:
Some blue G3s, especialy those aimed at the educational environment, were shipped with an 4 or 8-meg (forget if it was upgradeable, or pre-upgraded) ATi Rage 2 variant with a/v in and out, IIRC as a replacement for the beige models with a/v, which I suppose...
The Performa 467 is a rebadge of the LC III, sold into the home (vs. education) market - so if the VRAM you have matches the specs for the expansion on the LC III then you should be good to go!
Looks like a fun build!
Most 1990s games that have low-color requirements should run fine even without the G3, because they'll mostly be 68k era or very early PPC era anyway, and simcity 3000 (1999) should run fine on your G3/G4.
Have you had a chance to use or bench it without the G3? I've...
Disclaimer that I don't have that specific model, but, yes, this was normal for laptop batteries basically until just a couple years ago.
If the battery you have isn't leaking, misshapen, getting dangerously hot to the touch, etc, then I'd say you're good to go! >2 hours on such an old machine...
chatting about this on the IRC today, @demik found some information I had missed before, the 1400 is less "mobile 6200" in a direct sense but the 5300 is pretty much a PPC-upgraded 190 in the same way the 6200 is a PPC-upgraded 630, so commentary about the underlying architectures do largely...
Briefly: 6200's sound output is 16/22khz.
I'll pull out the 1400 at some point but I'm pretty sure it, too, will be 16/22, just because it's basically mobile 6200 but with some different modularity.
SoundJam MP 2.0.2 works, however:
16/22khz sound output is pretty disappointing
ripping with...
I forgot how giant 1990s computers are.
I've got a ~base-ish 7.6.1 install with the OT/AS upgrades needed to connect to newer file servers, speed doubler 8, and some of my favorite utilities and software. (AppleWorks 5, Office 98, most of the mid-1990s Claris software really, stuffit 5, etc...
My own 840av listening back in the day was just rawdog outputting the CD, which I think similar to the video hardware Macs might be able to pass through without any real effort? I'd have to look, at some pointI got a dedicated stereo because my parents didn't super love me turning on the...
I have both a 6100 and a 6200, as well as a 1400/166, I should take a look at some point.
Back in the day, my iMac/233 did "basically fine" with MP3s. I don't know if I'd say "trivial" -- especially on the /233, and especially with so little RAM as I had, but on a machine really set up well for...
I realize this isn't super useful but just to add: The best machine w/re any given hobby is the one in your hands.
If you can find and fix any 68k PowerBook, that will be the coolest one, because it's the one you've got.
We're multiple decades beyond the idea of any one of these things being...
Do we know off hand if the 580 works with the x200/x300 boards? It would more or less track as it's IIRC not compatible with the other previous 500-series or CC/CCII boards.
Hello and welcome in!
Ultimately, the best one is the one in your hands. That goes for pretty much any hobby.
The "good" Macs are, in fact, very good, but the "bad" ones ae almost always never as bad as people say they are/were, especially here in the modern context where none of us are using...
Sorry for the delay posting this! The site was unavailable from ~middway on the 28th through to a bit earlier this morning on the 30th, due first to a technical error at the hosting provider, and then an error rebooting the application host as part of the resolution to the first error.
I don't off hand know the part numbers or any signifying markers of the original vs. fixed parts, unfortunately.
I'd say if the service manual says, go ahead and copy the text and/or post a screenshot of it, it'd fall under fair use.
The 6200 (and all other Macs which share the same base architecture, of which there are many) can boot from CD/floppy, as well as other random external SCSI devices.
However, based on:
I think you are legitimately having a cache/ROM problem.
Unfortunately, this problem was somewhat common on...
You know, I'm actually not sure that the multia would be any worse at basic file services than the alphastation I've got, I suppose it'd depend on what internal and external storage it allows. And, you can argue how much that matters with modern SCSI replacers... hmmmm
