Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Yeah, I suspect the Mac was an incidental market for that card and that the primary market was big PC cases with the needful number of disk bays, whether wired or hot-swappable.
For Macs, if there was a version with an SFF8088 or similar connector on the back, for use with a desktop or...
Very neat!
That about tracks, RAID 5 is in theory capable of faster writing but most RAID cards prioritized being basically Good Enough at writes. Nominally RAID by this time was about either building a single bigger volume for convenience reasons or about fault tolerance should a disk fail. I...
Gotcha. That 6300 is still a competent machine, but the parts can a tleast be swapped to other machines later (you can run a 6300 board in a 6360 case, you can't, without mods, fully run a 6360 board in a 6300 or earlier case), worth either keeping, passing along, or selling if you can (I know...
Secondarily:
Beige G3 IDE is stable. It works great and consistently and you'll experience no data loss or corruption if you stay within these two guidelines:
- Boot partition 8GB or less, first partition on the disk
- This is less of a guideline and more of a limit, this machine predates LBA48...
Here's the core of my concern:
I fear that the 6360's case will not survive the mod you are proposing and that you'll be cutting out structural support steel and that on the other end of the mod, it at minimum won't support the weight of a CRT monitor and possibly may not look as good as you...
ADB/USB adapter will work but the power button may not work
The blue G3 shipped with a keyboard that had a power button but that was dropped very quickly, so I don't know how well it'll work on anything newer
SATA card should work with a DVD drive and I've believe I've seen that it'll be...
Apologies, "Yikes" is the codename for the Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics) -- it's the same platform as the blue-and-white Power Mac G3, but with fixed IDE and no ADB port.
Barefeats was a mac performance web site in the G3/G4 era and has some Quake 3 data: https://barefeats.com/quakeX.htm...
From the Beige (1997) to the Blue (1999):
faster bus
"NewWorld" firmware, although this means relatively little in practical terms these days
one more ram slot (1gb max vs. 768 max but os9 rarely needs more than 256)
IDE broken in different ways
IDE nominally fixed in blue-white Rev B, IDE...
I don't have a /550, but IME TiBooks aren't very fast. I had a 1GHz one and in actual usage at the time, with photoshop, it performed the same doing some heavy tasks in Photoshop CS2 as a Pismo/500 and a 1.83 Core1 MacBook Pro (with Rosetta, at the time.)
Some of that comes down to different...
Consider gandering through the pages of MacWorld in 2004-2005 for some ideas and context, you can get it at https://www.vintageapple.org/
Magazine reviews and overviews were lots (maybe not all, but definitely "lots") of how people found out about software back in the day. MacWorld had a...
The trick to doing this is to start with 9.1 and get the 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updaters together then use OS 9 Helper. If you're doing that process and it's failing, you're probably right, you may need a non-corrupted set of updates.
Some more info is at...
You don't need to flash the ROM to do htis, and for the most part without buying additional modern hardware, you can't really flash or replace the ROMs on these machines. (it's probably possible to build a replacement ROM but on its own that won't do what you need so I'm gonna call it "out of...
G3/G4-era machines should be sprightly in OS 9 and decent in many versions of OS X without a CPU upgrade. For OS 9, stock config will be fine. For OS X, RAM and storage are likely more impactful changes, especially since hard disks are a consumable.
So, there's a couple different strategies...
6300 should run Mac OS 9. They don't officially run 9.2.2, or even 9.2.1, so what I'd do is get a retail 9.0.4 or 9.1 CD and just use that. I've got a few EN-US images here: http://vtools.68kmla.org/~/coryw/iso-temp/ - these were ripped on windows, anything like imgburn should burn 'em fine.
As...
Let's go ahead and wrap this up w/re the name. I think we've gotten as much out of this as we really can.
The point has been sufficiently made: If you were designing, building, and selling this device, you would have given it a different name.
Great to hear this is working better now.
A bunch of the developer notes are here https://cdn.preterhuman.net/texts/computing/apple_hardware_devnotes/ and this is a good spot to learn about the design of the actual machines and the architecture. There's block diagrams of most machines and Apple...
In general, Macs prioritize keyboard and mouse input above a lot of other things, although Classic Mac OS is also... not very good software, by modern standards, so it doesn't necessarily surprise or concern me that it looks like it's just hard-locking for a while while it's busy.
If it...
Here's the limits: https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/volume-size-limits-under-hfs-and-hfs.3872/ - there's info about which TIL/KB article each of those limits were documented in on that post.
Replicated here for convenience in this context:
Under any '030 or earlier, the maximum volume...
This is real fun and it looks like you've made a lot of progress!
Mac OS 9 will be able to handle larger partitions (up to 2TB on this hardware) although at that point, I think system 7 may not be able to see the other partitions, so dual booting may be annoying. If you can get 7.6.1 running...
