Hi folks, I've recently acquired a beautiful B&W G3 from a friend when I was at the Everything Electric Show!
Naturally it's one with the dodgy IDE controller (I checked)! I tried replacing the 80pin cable with a standard 40 pin cable, but the only 3.5" IDE HD I had was a 40GB one that supports...
Hi folks,
I met up with a friend whom I haven't seen in decades, at the Everything Electric Show* in Farnborough and he gave me a number of StyleWriters in various states of disrepair! There's a 2x SWIIs, an SW1200 and a Color SW2400. One of the SWIIs (a yellowing one) doesn't seem to power up...
This looks pretty cool!
https://hackaday.com/2025/10/05/optimizing-a-quicktake-image-decoder-for-the-apple-iis-6502/
I'm a bit surprised he seemingly wanted to take QT image files and then convert those rather than take serial input from the QT150. And I thought that the serial data format for...
Hi folks,
Earlier this week I ploughed through all my old 100MB Zip disks (they still work) looking for a crude THINK C TCL, MIDI app I'd written that can edit sounds on a Yamaha DX100[1]. I didn't find the app, but I did find my legit copy of ClarisWorks 2.0; which Claris were giving away free...
Hi folks,
Does anyone know off-hand what happens if you simply remove the built-in LCD from an iceBook G3/600 (or disconnect it) and then connect up to an external display? I've just been trying to google that, but I just get references on using the iBook in Clamshell mode. I'm wondering this...
Hi folks,
I finally have a potential buyer for my eMac (originally from @CircuitBored ), who wants to use Pro Tools 5.1.1 with it, which needs the Mac to boot properly into Mac OS 9.2.2. This eMac should be able to do that. It's really an ATI 1GHz Combo (still a Combo) and this EveryMac page...
Hi folks,
I've just been trying to install Retro68, but it fell over somewhere when trying to link. As per the instructions, the first thing I did was:
brew install boost cmake gmp mpfr libmpc bison texinfo
Then there were some more commands ending in: ../Retro68/build-toolchain.bash . There...
Well, this is rather impressive! "Ken Designs" has developed a bare-metal SDK (compiled in gcc) which can boot on a classic Mac. He's used it to write a chip-8 emulator (which is fun, but not my primary interest). Check it out.
It's also on Hackaday.
I'm looking forward to seeing the SDK...
This is truly astounding. An article about the various control panel designs of Macs during from System 1.0. However, the demonstrations of the Macs are emulations run via Infinite Mac (you can embed emulations from there in other websites now, well done @mihai !! ). What's even more amazing is...
Can anyone help me here? I wanted to play around with a bit of Swift and SwiftUI (because that's what Apple are promoting). I've read quite a bit in the documentation and watched a few videos, but frankly there's something I'm not getting about declarative UIs.
Here's some code that illustrates...
This is a weird one. I've made passing comments on it a few times in a couple of other threads, but I think I have proof of it now.
I can boot up my Mac Plus under P-7.1 on my 40MB HD. I have a Zip drive attached too and an external FD. I have an 800kB, bootable disk with System 3.x and another...
Hi folks,
Now at last I understand, it's only taken me 38 years.
I started studying Computer Science at the University of East Anglia in September 1986. In basically the first introductory lecture I went to, the professor there covered the facilities the Computer Science department made...
Hi folks,
The flyback is fixed [https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/spot-the-bust-flyback-competition.47610/post-559192], but startup fails!
According to this TinkerDifferent page: https://tinkerdifferent.com/resources/sad-mac-error-codes.82/
The closest error appears to be:
$000E...
There's an article on Hackaday right now, celebrating the world's first Von Neumann computer, Manchester University's SSEM (known as "The Baby"); which ran its first program in June 1948.
So, many members might think ENIAC or perhaps even Cambridge's EDSAC, the Harvard Mark I (or IV), or Zuse's...
Hi folks,
I'm writing a little application in THINK C, targeting the standard Mac Toolbox API. I have a window with a scroll bar. Usually it scrolls up and down correctly and always correctly if it's a page up/down or slide to any position. However, sometimes if I hit the same arrow button...
Sometimes it's argued that the compact Mac era would have done better if Apple had produced one with Atari ST/ Amiga (ish) colour graphics.
Well, now you can try it out for yourself! I modified the PCE Mac emulator to support 256x171x 4bpp graphics as per this proposition on the thread...
Now that I've upgraded my MacBook Air M2 to macOS Sequoia, just for the login screen you understand ;-) I wanted to run the native version Mini vMac, but Apple have made it harder to run unsigned apps. You can circumvent it by first trying to run the app; then hitting (Cancel) then going into...
Hi folks,
I haven't done any Sound development for Classic Mac OS, but I thought that writing a simple DTMF (UK DTMF) player would be fun.
This is my minimally functional version that works on a Mac Plus under system 7 down to a Mac 128kB on System 1 (If you Run DtmfSys1. You can type digits...
I'm still planning to fix this PB5300 if I can. I have a spare power board (if that's what they're called?), so I think it's possible to cannibalise them to make a working one ( and I'm going to gloss over the details of that here).
What I'd like to find out as a first stage though is whether...
