Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
If you want to be able to run PPC binaries with Rosetta, stick to Snow Leopard. I've got nothing against Leopard (I wrote bits of it) but SNL is superior.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_(Intel-based)#3rd_generation:_Unibody is useful.
That's quite a capable machine (iMac9,1 with Penryn...

If you’re lucky, the PMU needs a reset.
If you’re unlucky, the PSU may indeed have given up the ghost. They’re prone to failure. Mine did and needed a partial recap. They run hot and a number of caps are...
Get a disk utility listing of all drives from the command line "diskutil list". That'll tell you what the organization is (partitions, volume types and sizes, etc). You may need to run First Aid to fix-up some volumes .. but start with the listing.
If boot fails earlier, not finding a boot drive, I'd expect the ?-floppy icon. If the booter fails or possibly if the kernel panics early, the circle-slash results. A verbose boot will say more. A safe-boot may be needed if kernel extension caches are corrupt.
If you don't have any luck with...
As a footnote to disabling the boot memory test...
On my beige G3 mini-tower running MacOS9.2, the memory test comes and goes mysteriously. It seems to return spontaneously. It may be that it's enabled by booting into OFW which I frequently do to boot other OSes. Perhaps XPostFacto is involved...
Concerning memory .. I don't know about the IIfx but on my IIci, A/UX 3.1.1 is picky about RAM organization. When I put 64MB in Bank B, it ignores it. With 4MB in Bank A, it will use only that, reach single-user but then get stuck swapping. With 1MB in Bank A, it hangs launching. I have to put...
https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/rebuilding-a-pismo-battery.39033/#post-538043 is a thread with assorted contributions on this topic … including my own.
I tried it on my 7100/80. No go, sadly. It has the original ROM and needs the v1.1.1 enabler. The Easter Egg dance produces only the regular System 7.5 breakout egg.
What was your partition layout when you started the OSX install? This failure would be consistent with attempting to installl OSX via XPF on a partition on the IDE drive that's beyond the first 8GB. There's an annoying hardware limitation here.
I've successfully installed OSX to IDE within 8GB...
You're correct. Panther (10.3) or Tiger (10.4) are required. And with XPF you can install either on any Beige G3. I have both DT and MT. The DT has a reflashed SIL3112 and SATA SSD.
Try forcing a safe boot (by holding the shift key on boot) to rebuild the kext cache. This will ensure the correct driver is pulled from the card’s ROM and cached.
It should run as configured, but I don't how much testing there was originally on these machines.
Note that the original kernel in binary form is here: https://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net/nubus-pmac/test/vmlinux-2.4.27-040811.gz

In particular, I've reconstructed kernel source for the linux-2.4.27 that runs both Yellow Dog 3.0 and Debian 3.0 on Nubus Powermacs.
