Reverse Engineering the Macintosh SE PCB & Custom Chips for 1:1 reproduction

It may be possible to bypass the code protection using glitching techniques for fault injection. But unless there's a documented method for this series of chips or someone experienced with glitching, it might just be easier to re-implement. I have code for at least one Apple ADB controller, but...

    Homebrew PRAM Batteries

I designed this thing a couple years ago and was intending to sell them. I ordered 300 custom cable assemblies for it. It's designed so that the original mainboard can be preserved without modifiction, while re-locating the battery somewhere else (I was thinking outside the case). I never...

Reverse Engineering the Macintosh SE PCB & Custom Chips for 1:1 reproduction

OK, I've been out of the 68k loop for a couple of years. Now look what is going on! Very nice! The Mac SE overall is the most reliable of the compact Macs. (Perhaps even most reliable of any Mac.) Through-hole parts, no leaky caps, the batteries don't often explode (mostly I have seen the Varta...

How about this: old hard drive sounds emulator?

By "sample" do you mean "recording"? As discussed previously, it makes far more sense to me to synthesize the audio with a DSP. On a Mac SE, Classic, etc. there is little to no difference in performance between an HDD and a SCSI2SD due to the 53C80 controller being so slow. For a machine with...

ADB Busboy: Adapter for USB peripherals over ADB

I have pivoted the project in a different direction. Keeping quiet about it until it's ready, because knowing me, it could be a while.

Building First Mozilla for PPC (and maybe eventually 68k)

If one follows the suggestion to use netatalk, then the resource forks are just extra files. You would just commit the resource forks like any other file in git. It does mean though that anyone using the repo would need to have a way to do the reverse operation. There's probably no way to avoid...

ADB Busboy: Adapter for USB peripherals over ADB

It's almost the same as USB Wombat. The primary differences are : * ADB Busboy has 2 USB ports * ADB Busboy only allows you use USB peripherals on ADB computers, not the opposite. * ADB Busboy has better power protection between the ADB host (computer) and USB bus.

This site looks like it's dead now. Maybe they need to pay their hosting bill.

    LCII Buggered C14 plus side...

I just pulled out my LC II and verified it against the real board too.

    LCII Buggered C14 plus side...

According to the BOMARC schematic, C14 is connected to pin 7 of UB9.

    Macintosh IIsi

The eyes follow the cursor around and occasionally blink. That's all they do. There were a lot of silly programs like this back then.

ADB Busboy: Adapter for USB peripherals over ADB

A related topic came up in IRC today so I figured I should really post an update.   I solved the unreliable behavior with daisy-chained hubs. Some USB devices draw a lot more inrush current than others. Adding a capacitor to each port solves this problem.   I redesigned the PCB to be about 40%...

Board Cleaning - Techniques - Chemical Reactions

I did the litmus test a while back. I decided that vinegar was the appropriate opposite pH range, so the goo must have been alkaline. I only did one sample, so YMMV.

Board Cleaning - Techniques - Chemical Reactions

Ultrasonic cleaning is definitely the way to go. Wish I could afford one large enough for logic boards!

AllMacs re-cap service on eBay - experiences?

The photo on the AllMacs ebay listing shows that they used through-hole capacitors. Not a good sign, IMO.

This is a really good write-up. Nice project! The access point switcher should be fun too.

    Vintage Mac as Crypto-currency Tool

Techknight, that is how hardware wallets work. Cory, you seem to be stuck on the idea of mining. Most people who own bitcoin have never mined anything. I agree that a modern air-gapped computer is better than a vintage one for maintainability. There are many good mobile wallets. Mycelium...

    Vintage Mac as Crypto-currency Tool

Well, no. A network-connected computer can never be as secure as an air-gapped one. Setting aside paper wallets for a moment to address this suggestion that a well-maintained PC is "good enough." If you have a small enough amount of bitcoin that it doesn't matter to you one way or another...
