99% likelihood that the drive heads are stuck to a rubber bumper. That old rubber turns into a gooey sticky melty mess as it tries to return to its original state. You may have encountered rubber feet in a similar state.

Not really. I still don't have a (semi-universal, not involving adhesive) method for attaching the battery outside the case. It could be a free-hanging box I guess, but that's awkward. I'm open to ideas.

Presumably they never ported SuperCard from Carbon to Cocoa, which is why it no longer works in Catalina. If they didn't do it by now I would be surprised if they ever do.
